How can I remove a bios password?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) February 17th, 2011

I have an old IBM ThinkPad that I want to re-install 98 on. It has files from someone else, so that’s why i want a clean start. The only thing is that the BIOS is protected by a password.I have tried hirens boot CD but it won’t load upon the 94 megs of ram, so is there another way to remove a bios password?

Somewhere on the motherboard there should be a small battery, like a watch battery. Remove that, wait 5 minutes, put it back and turn it on. Password should be gone.

I’m going by memory from a computer engineering course I took 8 years ago, but I’m pretty sure that will work.

founf it, it’s just being a b*tch to take out. It’s gues in and connected with a clip, not the usual battery holder.

Fuck, now it’s telling me it needs a new battery (error codes 00161 and 00163)

i just bricked a piece of history and I’m flat broke. Damnit.

What sort of battery? A computer that old is likely to have a nearly dead BIOS battery anyways, so I am surprised it even remembered the BIOS password.

Most computers (desktops at least) I have dealt with take a CR2032 watch battery that you should be able to find for only about $2. Still, I doubt you actually bricked it; you just need to wait until payday.

I got no paydays coming in the near future soI might just pull one out of my laptop’s remote controll and solder that onto the wires that connected the old one.

Too bad you aren’t nearby. Like any computer geek, I always have spares.
