Does anybody know an inexpensive place to get good quality prescription glasses?

Asked by MatChup (204points) February 21st, 2011

My current glasses just broke in half from the bridge. I bet they were too cheap. I got them while I was in a trip to Australia. So I am in the market for good quality prescription glasses. However, I don’t have insurance so I have to pay it out of pocket.

I have a couple of pairs from Zenni Optical- very reasonable.

You need to get high-quality lens, but you can stint on a frame.

I have a pair of glasses I use only for the piano and another on for the computer.

I had new lenses put into ancient and ugly frames that I had lying around. See whether you can mooch frames from a friend or the optometrist.

PS. Where do you live? Here, in the Albany, NY area, there is www.lenscrafters.com

I have a couple of frames I was using as sunglasses very god quality I can use those frames, sure. But what I need is am inexpensive place where to get the lenses and the eye exam.
These are the prices I got so far:

EYE STYLES LENS CRAFTERS COSTCO WALMART
Bi Focals Progressive 250 365 160 256
Eye Exam 90 65 49 58

I just wonder why optical shops charge so much for the lense work when the optical lab charges like 700% less. I called an optical lab as an optometrist to inquire for prices and found out these facts.

I input this data as a table, but it displays it as text only and it doesn’t show the spaces, hmmm

Bifocals (and particularly progressive ones) are more expensive because of the double RX.

Totals; 340, 430, 209, and 314. Costco seems the best deal.

Do you need the exam? You don’t have a written prescription from your trip to Oz?

Labs here in Canada can tell you what your prescription is. Zenni also does bifocals.

True. Any service can check your Rx without the exam.

Costco, Lenscrafters, or WalMart’s vision center.

Is there an Optometry School near you? I went to the University of California School of Optometry, the eye exam was a nominal amount, and the frames and lenses are sold at cost.

I purchased a pair of prescription reading glasses from Goggles4U Prescription Eyeglasses with the linked coupon. The entire transaction took place online (I have a copy of my prescription). They are not high quality glasses, but they got the prescription exactly right. My total outlay was $8.00.

@ratboy, thanks for the link, it seems a promising site. I’ve chatting with live with customer service. It sounds like a very good deal
