Nope.
If your 130 lbs is composed entirely of flab, maybe get more exercise to tone up and be healthy, but just on the face of it, 130 is not overweight for 5“5”.

No, you are not overweight.

How did you get 26.1 for your BMI? The formula I know goes like this:

Calculate the BMI in three steps:

Step 1: Multiply your weight by 703.
Step 2: Divide that number by your height in inches.
Step 3: Divide that number again by your height in inches.

For you:

Step 1: 130×703 = 91,390
Step 2: 91390/65 = 1,406
Step 3: 1,406/65 = 21.63

So your BMI is 21.63, which is in a healthy range. And just for the record, this is using a basic formula, it is not necessarily spot on for you. There is also a body fat calculator on this page that is another measurement you may want to look at.

This doesn’t meant that you’re healthy, by the way. You need to eat right, get some exercise, get your sleep and take care of yourself in general. Only you and your parents know if that’s happening.

No. like tedibear, I got 21.6 as your BMI too. Which is smack bang in the middle of the ‘normal’ range.

Weight is just one of a large number of factors that can be used to quantify and label people. The strange thing is that weight is often used when the issue is body image. It’s too easy to get hung up on the number and start reducing it by not eating for a while. That just becomes a displacement activity for some other underlying concern. Exercise is a better way to manage weight (not that you need to!) than changing your eating patterns.

If you feel good and you are looking good then why bother checking for small fluctuations in weight? If you’re not feeling good or think that you are not looking your best, then it might be an underlying health issue that a visit to the doctor could sort out simply and quickly.

I am guessing you might be a little larger than the other girls in your class, so by comparison, you might feel heavy or might be told you are heavy. Some “junior size” girls are reed thin, hard to compare yourself to.

What makes you ask this question, if i may ask?

No and as a 14 year old girl, you should not be worried about this unless maybe you weighed 190 then just exercise, not really worry. I am hoping this question is not derived from low self-esteem. No matter what size you are, being beautiful has nothing to do with looks.

I work in a medical office and just checked the BMI chart on the wall – tedibear is right, you fall in the middle of the normal range. If you feel that you have a little baby pudge going on left over from your preteens, don’t worry about it. As the mother of two teenage girls, I can tell you that from 13–17, your body does some major shifting. You are likely to notice some changes that create an overall body that is more proportioned (in other words, even though the weight # might not change, your body shape still might).

No your not, and your far to young to be seriously concerned about things like this. Your body is going to change a lot in the next couple years.

I know how important “labels” are at your age.
Breath easy. Your weight is perfect for your height.
Did you accidentally put in 4’5”? That might account gor a higher bmi score.

How did anyone get the idea that the asker was female?

whattodowhattodo's avatar

@Zaku – wow – great question. I just assumed – how very wrong of me!

tedibear's avatar

@Zaku – I assumed it because I’ve heard very few 14 year old boys worry about their weight. It doesn’t mean that they don’t, it just means I’ve not heard much of it.

If you are a girl, you might be towards the heavier side of normal, unless you work out quite a bit and have a very low percentage of fat, and high muscle mass. If you are a boy you are not overweight at all. At the age of 14 I would not recommend dieting, but I would recommend making some healthier choices if you are eating a lot of junkfood, and maybe adding to your physical activity if you don’t get much exercise, to get these things into part of your routine.

It would be nice if the OP came back to the discussion.
