Could it possibly be true that the Obamas were not invited to the royal wedding because they are black?

Asked by anartist (14808points) February 22nd, 2011

A friend said this after watching a newscast in which it was stated that the President and First Lady of the US were not on the guest list. I find this unbelievable.

Ballyhoo.

Why would the you invite someone you don’t know to a wedding?

SavoirFaire's avatar

@cackle Do you seriously think the royal wedding is limited to close friends and family of William and Kate? That’s not how these functions work, unfortunate as it may be.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

Out of all the reasons for them not to be invited, I doubt that’s the reason. And even more, I doubt that if that was the reason, anyone who knew that would go around announcing it.

“Officials confirmed that 1,900 invitations to the April 29 ceremony at Westminster Abbey were mailed to a mix of Commonwealth politicians, foreign royals, family, friends and celebrities. Although most of the names were expected, there were a few notable surprises.”—Hollywood Reporter

The Obamas aren’t Commonwealth politicians, nor are they foreign royals, nor family, nor friends, and they’re not celebrities.

anartist's avatar

@MyNewtBoobs I agree, no one would ever admit it.
I guess it would only look funny and draw speculation if other heads of state were going—something of which I know nothing.

Nullo's avatar

Unlikely.

@cackle Barry is at the head of a rather closely allied power, though. His omission is a little surprising. Though he may have made a bigger faux pas with the Region 1 DVDs and maladapted iPod than first thought. This is why it pays to hire good staff, people!

No it is because, Obama has nothing but scorn for English aristocracy, i think he would find it excruciating, he isn’t a great lover of the English and Englishness, he thinks he’s better than them, which he isn’t, but he is as arrogant.

markferg's avatar

I’d have to take a comment like that as being a joke.

If you’re the sort of person that really is hung up on skin colour or racial origins then, using that ‘logic’, Barack is less ‘black’ than some of the Commonwealth heads of state and prime ministers that are invited. So, that can’t be the reason. It is likely that there is no official royal link with the US, thus there is no reason to invite the head of state of a country that has no link to the processes related to royal succession. Or, he was asked if he wanted to come and declined the offer of being invited, which would be seen as less diplomatically embarrassing than turning down an actual, formal invite.

Bellatrix's avatar

I was just about to say the same thing as @markferg. We are talking the Commonwealth, many of the heads of state/VIPs are not white so it cannot be anything to do with colour. And again, in agreement with @markferg it is possible the discussion of an invitation took place quietly, the Obamas were unavailable and so they were not included on the guest list.

meiosis's avatar

Yes. That would be exactly the reason. FFS.

Only two more months to go of this festival of bullshit, but boy they’re going to be a hard two months to stay sane through. The only saving grace is that we’re all being given a day off to ‘celebrate’.

for celebrate, read “get as far away from the telly as possible”

Apparently the “chosen one” visits these shores some time in May. I’m sure he’ll arse lick….....congratulate the happy couple then. Be nice if Bin Laden was invited, he could bring a shit load of dynamite, as a wedding present you understand. Only kidding…..or am I?

misstrikcy's avatar

i agree with @mammal…. it’s not about colour. It’s about him not likeing us very much, and not hiding it.
During the Gulf oil spill, did he ever refer to BP as BP (a multi-national company for over 20 years)? No, he only ever used the term BRITISH Petroleum…
He’s been very aloof with us (not at all like all your other presidents) and seems very reluctant to develop any kind of ‘relationship’ with us.
Fair enough I suppose, each to their own.
My point is, if he’s going to bitch about us, he’s not going to get invited to our Royal Wedding…..
Would you invite someone to your wedding, who just bitches about you? Of course not…

It’s not surprising Obama has antipathy for us Brits. His dad was Kenyan, and we fucked the Kenyans. Chickens coming home to roost, and all that.

joannamc's avatar

It’s not colour. Sarkozy is not invited either. And Sarkozy is a next door neighbour! Not very neighbourly is it?

Seelix's avatar

Actually, @joannamc, according to the Snopes article, Sarkozy is invited. Anyway, if you look at the link that @bob_ provided or at mine (both are similar), the official story is now that the Royals have no problem with the Obamas, and have no “obligation” to invite them to the wedding as William is not next in line for the throne.

Whatever the reason, I strongly doubt that race or colour has anything to do with it. That’s ridiculous.

joannamc's avatar

@Seelix confused now as The Telegraph says that they are not. Snopes articles is interesting though.

Nullo's avatar

@joannamc Despite what they would like you to think, Snopes is not infallible.

I like to believe this statement from: ‘The UK’s Daily Mail reported that William and Kate want to fill the seats of Westminster Abbey with ordinary citizens. And because the wedding isn’t an official state event, the couple doesn’t feel compelled to invite foreign dignitaries’.

Anyway with the state of the economy the way it is, spending however many millions of dollars it will cost for travel and security seems like another unnecessary waste.

VS's avatar

The Obamas were not invited to the wedding because it is not an occasion of state. If other heads of state were being invited and the Obamas were omitted, that might give rise to your question, but other heads of state are on the uninvited list as well. I understand that Kanye West and Elton John are both invited, so so much for not inviting blacks (or gay white men, for that matter).

Pandora's avatar

With as much as terrorist hate Americans and the British, I wouldn’t but them all into a festivity either. A royal wedding would be difficult enough to work out all the security detail. Throw in the first family and it becomes a nightmare.

flutherother's avatar

Yes, it is true that they weren’t on the guest list but that is because Obama isn’t a member of a royal family or a representative of a Commonwealth country. Many representatives of the Commonwealth are black and they were of course invited.

Ronald Reagan and his wife were invited to the wedding of Charles and Diana as this was an official state occasion as Charles was next in line to the throne. William isn’t a direct heir to the throne so the protocol is different and no heads of state were invited to his wedding.
