Should I call about this job or not?

Asked by tedibear (19304points) February 23rd, 2011

Last week I applied for a job. I emailed my resume’ and received a response the next day requesting pictures of my work. I forwarded those along with the requested times for phone interview availabilty. I heard back that evening (via email) that this person would call me on Monday as he was working from home, but we didn’t set a time. That was fine with me as I had said that I would be home all day. He was very enthusiastic in his email about talking with me and was complimentary about the pictures of my work.

As of 4:00PM on Monday, I hadn’t heard from him. I sent him an email, although I must say that I don’t know if he has work email access at home. I told him that he was welcome to call me up until 8:30 that evening or that we could make a lunchtime appointment on Wednesday or Thursday. I never heard anything from him.

It’s now 10:50AM on Wednesday and I’ve not heard anything. I checked my home email and there was nothing. My dilemma is that I don’t know if I should contact him again. Do I let it go and possibly miss a great opportunity? Do I contact him and take the chance of being annoying?

I think you have every right to contact him. He did say “Monday.”

What’s the worst that can happen? Just keep your voice modulated, be courteous and don’t overtalk.

“I hope that I’m not disturbing you. I thought you said that you would contact me on Monday, but maybe I misunderstood.” And so on.

And I too.

I think that keeping on trying to contact him shows you are seriously interested in the job. If they are interested in you, they will like that. If they are not interested, they won’t like it, but it might pressure them into telling you they aren’t interested sooner.

Okay, I called. The person who answered the phone interrupted him while he was in the kitchen to ask if he wanted to talk to me right then. They need to fill this position pretty quickly. She came back and said that he would call me in about a half hour. We’re at 45 minutes, but I suspect he is quite busy.

Thank you, all!

@tedibear: That is disheartening, I must say. IF he hasn’t called back by the end of work today, I would assume 1) that I will not get the job, and 2) I would not be happy working for an employer who is so sloppy.

If someone is really working at home, he takes a lunch hour and then behaves professionally for the rest of the day. He is not picking up his phone and he is letting the responder pass on that the guy is in the kitchen and too busy. Not good signs.

He called back about a half hour after my post. I’m not sure how to describe it, but it sounded quite hectic in the background. To be expected considering the field.

I’ll be doing a demo for them next week as well as taking one of their classes. I think this will give me a better feel for the place and the chef.

@gailcalled – That is sound advice. I will keep my eyes open. Thank you!

@tedibear: Chef? Kitchen? If this is a food-service related job, then I retract my reservations. I thought that he was in the kitchen making himself lunch.

Good luck.

If he hasn’t called you yet, then who cares if you are annoying? I think the rewards outweigh the risks here. Give ONE MORE call! Good luck.

Oops. Just read that he already called back! Congrats. LOL
