How do we get rid of unwanted attic pests?

Asked by awomanscorned (11261points) February 23rd, 2011 from iPhone

My attic attracts flying squirrels. They are adorable and I’m very against killing them, so no poison or kill traps or anything like that suggested please. We put a trap up there and we’ve caught around 7 and released them at a park a ways away, but there are too many to get rid of them all that way. There not much of a problem, just messy and noisy at night. It’s amazing the sounds they make scampering and skittering and jumping in the middle of the night…

If you’ve got that many squirrels in the attic, then you’ll soon have that many in the walls and eventually in the kitchen.

What you absolutely must do is find their entrance into the attic and seal that off. And if you do that before you evacuate the attic completely, then those squirrels will become desperate for food and water and work their way into the house sooner than they might have otherwise. Either that, or they’ll die horribly and slowly.

If you can manage it, sealing off all of the opening/s during the daylight after all of the animals have left for the day to feed might work to simply keep them from returning.

To me, it sounds like either you need a new roof or eaves.

Where ever your roof vents are, do they have mesh/screening over them?

Did your pest guy check to see if you have caps/covers on your roof vents or chimney (if you have one)?

Sometimes moth balls deter them- the old stinky kind you can likely still get at a dollar shop. Also keeping a light on in there could deter them. (It works to get rid of Opossums. We don’t get squirrels in an attic in my area)

Seal off the attic. Call a vet and see what flying squirrels like to eat, put some of that in a safe trap just outside the attic. . . Eventually, they’ll all be gone!

Set up the trap when you are planning to leave, so your ruckus won’t intimidate them into hiding.

This happened to a friend of mine! He eventually just let them live with the humans. But there were only three, and it sounds like you are describing quite a few more than three! LOL

Good luck.

Another thought: Do you have tree limbs hanging near your eaves? Where are the squirrels “flying” from? I doubt they are climbing into your attic.

If it’s tree limbs, this is the best time of year for limb trimming.

If you can figure out how they’re getting in, this works well to get rid of them humanely. Make the access hole small enough to fit the only the trap into. If it’s through the eaves, it’s fairly easy. I’m assuming you’re using a humane, live catch trap.(2 Foot rectangle with a spring loaded door on one end and a trip plate in the middle.) Put the trap in the hole and open the back end of the trap(Yeah,Yeah damn dirty minds:) That way they can get out but not back in.You might have to make the front door open easier. Leave it for a while and they’ll find anther place to live. Then fix the hole.

Board up whatever holes that they might be using. Keep the traps out. Maybe get an owl.

You get all of the good animals!
