What happens if I don't register my domain name?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) February 23rd, 2011

I am planning on setting up a small website using apache on a pc I will be getting. The I plan for there to be a logon that only I know the username and password too, and I mainly want to use it tobe able to download files from (like school work) from school.

If I don’t register the domain name what will happen? Will the cops come after me or something?

no cops, but someone else can register the name and it will be theirs, nothing you can do about it.

But If I don’t register it the only thing that could happen is someone else registering it?

It is not a law to register the name, it is to protect the owner

sweet

I can’t pay for a domain name right now, and this will be a small site that only I will know. Thanks!

If it’s connected in any way, someone else can know about it. Registering a domain doesn’t have to cost a lot. A lot of sites run deals for only a few bucks. I’ve run several sites over the last ten years, some of them I’ve only had to pay $5 for. I would do it, if only to protect yourself – even if it’s just protecting yourself in case you change your mind later.

@asmonet How long did that 5 bucks last? Can you reccomend one?

DynDNS will give you a free domain name which you can host on your home computer.

Highly recommended by me, I have used them for years.

@jaytkay What are the pro benifits? does it allow you to jsut have www.mywebsite.com insteadt of the .dns-whatever.com?

XOIIO's avatar

oh hey. mywebsite.com is a site.

lol

@XOIIO DynDNS pro lets you have 30 free domains instead of just one among other benefits.

I use the free version. I have a single free domain – something like myrealname,dyndns.org.

I use it to host web pages on my home computer and for an FTP server. Mostly I use it for Remote Desktop – I can connect to my home computer from anywhere by just connecting to myrealname,dyndns.org, instead of having to figure out what my IP address might be today.

Ahhh.

Well, If I do make a website I probably won’t register it for a while, and I can always use teamviewer to get to the PC, the only thing is that there isn’t a teamviewer protable for macs like there is for PC’s

You can access your website by entering “http://[your ip address]” in your browser’s address bar. For example: http://127.0.0.1

You don’t strictly need a domain name at all if you have a publicly routable IP address. If you don’t have one you will need to use a service like DynDNS or PageKite. (Basically you will need to tunnel past your NAT to a predefined endpoint. PageKite provides this, I don’t know about DynDNS.)

Yeah, but routing the Internet through my iPod with pdanet is tricky, and the proffers might mess with it.

koanhead's avatar

What do you mean by “routing the internet through your ipod”? Are you trying to access the site with your ipod? What’s a proffer?

I have my second gen cracked screen and bad audio jack and 4th gen cracked. I can use PDANet to route the Internet from my iPod’s wifi to my PC via USB cable. I have no use for the second get so I’ll leave it hooked up all the time. Saves me from buying a USB wifi adapter.

Do you know how NAT works, and are you behind a NAT?
If so, you will need to use a service like PageKite to serve web pages to the internet.
If not, what I said about the IP address still holds true.

What you need is Tonido it allows you to turn your computer into a cloud – the desktop edition is free (runs on win, mac, and linux) and has a lot of cool features.

Another option is pogoplug which is also free but you have to buy the pogoplug device for 100.00

I have used and like both

@mrlaconic but if my PC turns into a could won’t it stop working?

lol jk, it looks great!
