I'm looking for a job as a freelance translator/editor. Any directions..?

Asked by archaeopteryx (1004points) February 25th, 2011

Hi,

I’m a student of English for Specific Purposes at the Jordanian University for Science and Technology. I am currently looking for a job opportunity as a freelance translator and editor.

I can translate between English (my second language) and Arabic (my mother language), but I’m not sure where to look.

Could anyone please point me towards any agencies or companies that are looking for people with such qualifications?

And if not, then what are some helpful tips I can use if I want to start my own translation business?

Thanks very much for your help.

Check out odesk, or freelancer where you can find translation job to work on after you bid one. Good luck!

Try the CIA. I hear they’re looking for just that skill.

Your best bet is companies that do “localization and globalization” taking websites,, publications, training materials, slide shows and other company products of a company entering new markets and translating and redesigning them for the target country. They work almost exclusively with online contractors.
One large company is WeLocalize
There is also a group on LinkedIn for leads called GALA
Good Luck!

Start off looking for volunteer opportunities. There may be a website for volunteer opportunities in your region. You can also post ads in various classified listings (online – like Craigslist – and print, locally).
