Should funeral homes be allowed to have sirens on their vehicles?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) March 1st, 2011

This law changed, in my state, several years ago. This law allows each licensed funeral home to have a vehicle equipped with a police siren, to use to warn other vehicles on the road, that a funeral procession is approaching and to yield. There have been many cases of abuse, in this law, already. Question: do you believe that funeral home vehicles should be equipped with police sirens for a personal business?

Forgive me, I’m tempted to say a loud siren in a funeral procession might wake the dead. But what I will say is that this law seems horribly misguided to me. Driving to a grave site is emotionally stressful enough—but my God, having to listen to a siren, too… awful.

I’ve never seen this. Around here they use those orange lights, similar to what a newspaper carrier might use… but never an actual police siren. That seems extreme.

Usually sirens are for emergencies involving the saving of life or the prevention of substantial harm.

AFAIK, the dead have already lost their lives, so no matter how fast their rides get them to their funerals, they will be DOA anyway.

In the cases of rushing to a major crime in progress or pursuing a dangerous suspect, even if an evil corpse underwent zombification and escaped from its ride, a hearse would not be the best pursuit vehicle, so again, no siren needed.

No. I can’t think of anything that is less of an emergency.

Burying someone is a luxury, as are funeral processions. Sirens should not be used for a funeral service and they should especially not be used to make cars yield to a funeral procession.

Shouldn’t a flashing light be enough? Maybe one of those dome lights you stick to the roof?

When I worked at a cemetery and funeral home, the police would escort the funeral procession from the funeral home to the cemetery when it was expected to be large. I do not think funeral home vehicles should be allowed to have sirens. There is enough confusion on the road already.

I think that the siren would ruin the atmosphere.
That said, haven’t they been getting along pretty well without one?

I think of a siren as being for an emergency vehicle.

If the person is dead already, there is no emergency.

No, the siren doesn’t suit the atmosphere. Not needed and inappropriate. People following the hearse are in no hurry and there’s no emergency
