Do "Big" people have more taste buds?

Asked by xjustxxclaudiax (1963points) March 1st, 2011

This morning on my way home my friend was chowing down on some of my Hot Cheeto Hot Fries, and I noticed how it seemed like he savored every bite and that the next one would be better. So I said “I like how your able to enjoy food so much, I love your facial expressions when you eat. Sometimes I wonder if you can taste food better than me.” Which lead him to say, “That would be an interesting study, to see if big people have more taste buds than skinnier people.”...I’m not skinny, I’m chubby…But he’s a lot bigger than I am, and he eats a lot more than I do. What do you guys think?...I love food btw but he never fails to convince me that something tastes really good….even tho the last couple of times it wasnt as good as he put off.

I don’t think it’s necessarily that “big” people have more or better taste buds, just that some people have more developed/sensitive taste buds than others in general. Some of us are just more sensitive to some tastes than others.

I agree with @Seaofclouds, I’m a bigger guy in height and weight, but I can’t seem to taste most things. Some people just are better at tasting I suppose.

No, but do you smoke? Because that will dim the taste of food for you.

No I don’t smoke, but he does.

I have heard that when people are born they have a lot more taste buds than adults and babies actually have them on the sides and roof of their mouths too. Babies can actually taste certain things that are vitually unknown or “forgotten” by adults. The taste buds diminish as we grow older, but for a few unfortunate folks known as “super-tasters” they tend to retain a lot more tastebuds.

Contrary to what it would seem, the more tastebuds you have, the more likely it is that some foods will taste really strong and bad (mostly bitter) to you than if you have less tastebuds. If you have less tastebuds, you are less likely to be a picky eater than if you have more tastebuds. This appears to be due to the fact the the folks with less tastebuds, don’t taste all of the “unpleasant” and strong flavors, therefore, just about everything tastes just fine. I think I fall into this category. I like just about everything, but I am not a big person, nor am I overweight, although I love to eat. I am pretty health conscious, though, and that makes a big difference on what and how much I eat.
