What exactly is art deco or what makes something art deco?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) March 2nd, 2011

I’ve heard the term and looked at the examples, but what defines or determines that something is art deco?

This pretty much sums it up. It talks about how the style “art deco” came to be known as such and it gives specific examples of art deco pieces and it also explains how it is different from “art nouveau” which preceded it. And it gives examples of more modern art pieces that are based on the original art deco, but are still considered art deco because they are so associated with the original designs.

Art Deco is an architectural period from 1925–1940 and is based on geometric designs. (I live in Wis, so the first name that comes to mind to best describe this is Frank Lloyd Wright).

I know there’s a formal definition, but whenever I hear ‘art deco,’ I always think of the American Radiator Building in New York. This is possibly my favorite building.
