For a good overview, read these articles from Wikipedia. Pre-1927 and post-1927.

The BBC had the only licence to broadcast in the UK until 1973. It aimed to inform, educate and entertain. It broadcast music, debates, lectures, comedy, sports, drama and children’s programmes.
