Why does my mouth itch and hurt when I eat walnuts?

Asked by JustJessica (4054points) March 6th, 2011

I love walnuts but every time I eat them my mouth and lips itch like crazy… Is this an allergic reaction? my throat doesn’t close up or anything so I know it’s not fatal. Is their something I can do to stop it? It also happens when I eat bananas, cantaloupe, and avocados. These are all some of my favorite foods.

Certainly sounds like an allergic reaction.

You might be allergic to them. Try taking an antihistamine 2 hours beforehand and see if it makes a difference. Walnut allergies are quite common. Are you allergic to anything else? Can you eat peanuts?

Mild allergies?!

@worriedguy I have no problem eating any nuts, just walnuts my favorite :-(. I’m going to try benadryl before hand and see if it helps.

@JustJessica make sure you get the non-drowsy kind or you won’t be awake to try.

Oral protein allergy.

Are you also allergic to ragweed?

@JustJessica While it is more common at a an early age, it is possible to develop an allergy at any time. If it gets bad you might have to switch to something else.

With the fruit, it could be a reaction to certain chemicals that may be present from the growing process, like some pesticides, etc. If they are organic, then it’s possible you’re allergic to the fruit itself. The same thing happens to me when I eat bananas and apples. And melons.
