Can you recommend some good books for a long flight?

Asked by Mamradpivo (9665points) March 6th, 2011

I have a long trip coming up next week (21 hours total) and I need a good brain-candy book or two to take my mind off it. I feel like a thriller of some sort would be great. My last long trip I read “Pillars of the Earth,” which was great. But this time I really want something almost mindless. Any suggestions? Or, how would you kill time on a trip from the US west coast to Europe?

The DaVinci Code or any other Dan Brown book.

@marinelife How was his newest one (the one that takes place in DC)? I took several years off from Dan Brown but I was thinking I might try the new one for this trip. Thanks.

Anything from Mary Higgins Clark could fill the bill.

Caught Stealing, Six Bad Things, A Dangerous Man, and The Shotgun Rule by Charlie Huston are all amazing, intense books. Great till the last drop.

Damn, I was totally going to suggest Pillars of the Earth…

@MyNewtBoobs Crazy, right? It was a perfect book for a really long trip. I’m about halfway through the sequel too.

This is my choice for a long flight and it can be bought at a Goodwill Store for about $4 bucks.

Guinness World Records. No matter what year you are fortunate to fine, each book is filled with photographs and interesting world records that will hold your interest for hours.

$4 dollars is not a bad price in order to keep your sanity on a 21 hour flight.

I buy one each time i locate one at Goodwill. A bonus is something you learn from each book.

You would also like Alex Rider series by Horowitz. His books are great, it has suspense, humor, action, killing…..Anyway, try and go to this link and read the various summaries of this author’s books!!!!!!. You’ll love his books

The link didn’t work so I’m not sure which one you meant. In any case, on a long flight I would treasure any book the puts me to sleep!

Honestly if you want “brain candy” and want to not be able to put it down, bring Harry Potter. One of the later ones, because they’ll last longer. Or like, all of them.
I read the Twilight series on a plane, just to kill time

@zenvelo You’d have to take the third book too – I couldn’t possibly leave a gap between the end of The girl who played with fire and The girl who kicked the hornet’s nest!!

Follet’s World without End links to Pillars of the Earth, but you said you wanted a change… erm, I’ve just finished The luminous life of Lilly Aphrodite, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but it’s probably a bit saddening for a flight…

The Stand by Stephen King.

Try A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. It’s my latest obsession. It’s fantasy but not in the traditional sense of elves and goblins – think high-drama soap-operaish storyline involving knights. Kind of.

Anyway, I love the series – it’s 4 books so far – and in April HBO is premiering a TV show based on it. Check out the HBO site if you want a taste.

And I also have to say – I could not get into the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. At all. I tried to read it twice.

The Hunger Games is a really good book (I’ve only read the first of the triology) but it’s short.
I second The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Road but it’s also short.
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is the best book i’ve read in the last couple of years.
You could start the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King. It’s 7 books long and I’ve heard great things about it.
