Would it be cruel to ask fellow Jellies to stop pursuit of the "Cake in the Frizzer" award?

Asked by Dog (25152points) March 10th, 2011 from iPhone

I know that the jellies have no idea what it is doing. I had no idea myself.

I heard from support and accessing the really long archive questions is putting a big strain on the servers.

For the last 48 hours I have gotten lots of lurve- even this morning- from those old threads so the pursuit is still on.

The end result is that the site is slowing down for everyone and we are getting error messages.

So would it be rude to ask that the chase for awards be suspended for to greater good?

I will give you my awards and give you cookies! :D

Eliminate the chase for all awards or just those processing intensive ones?

In either case, I’d be in favor of it. But I never liked the awards in the first place.

wilma's avatar

Chocolate Chip cookies?

Dog's avatar

@wundayatta At this point the pursuit of my award that involves visiting the old questions.

@wilma Yep!

Summum's avatar

I vote in favor ot it @Dog

wilma's avatar

I’d do just about anything for cookies.

erichw1504's avatar

How about upgrading the current servers or adding additional ones? I have noticed Fluther lagging every-so-often.

marinelife's avatar

I don’t think it would be fair.

I think the current rush will come to an end soon.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Is that what’s going on?!?! Glad it’s that and not a general “oops the system is about to crash” thing.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I apologize for my part in bogging down the system yesterday. I got lost in the frizzer.

Dog's avatar

@erichw1504 Should we pass around a hat to pay for extra servers?

@WillWorkForChocolate Awww apology not needed. We lurve you! You did nothing wrong. <3

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Dog You offered to throw in a $10 to help me with my catpeecouch, I’ll throw in the same to help the site if needed. =0)

Dog's avatar

:D I will match that!!!

AmWiser's avatar

Anything for you @Dog but I didn’t do it:)

erichw1504's avatar

@Dog Do you accept lurve points as cash?

Seelix's avatar

Sorries from me too :(

Dog's avatar

@Dog gives @Seelix cookies. :D

Seelix's avatar

@Dog – Dog cookies or people cookies?

Dog's avatar

@Seelix people cookies- but I have dog biscuits too if you want to try one. :D

thorninmud's avatar

Thanks all, there already seems to be a big difference!

Lightlyseared's avatar

Yes.

Sorry but the awards were set up to encourage people to interact with the site in new and different ways. If the the end result of that is it slows down and make the place behave in potentially harmful ways then I think you have to question if the awards are worth the effort.

Alternatively you could have just modded the question that gave away (however obliquely) the solution to get the award.

gailcalled's avatar

I have the award, garnered a long time ago.

I will deed it to the fluther who demonstrates the best random act of kindness today.

Start now…

janbb's avatar

I’ve always wanted to bring something to its knees! Who knew I’d start a gold rush?
Anyway, I suspect and hope its 15 minutes of fame are over and Fluther is fluthering again as usual. Sorry ‘bout that!

Dog's avatar

@Lightlyseared I totally agree! But since the awards were created circumstances have changed. It would be up to @Augustlan to pull the classics but I would hope the it would never come to that.

Again- nobody did anything even remotely wrong. And I have COOKIES! :D

janbb's avatar

@Dog I’ll be there!

Dog's avatar

Oh guys! Load times are getting so much faster already!

I LURVE YOU ALL!

<3

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I forgot to take you up on the cookies. I’d like one please. Or if you’re already out, I suppose I can try a dog biscuit.

Dog's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate I just brought a new batch out of the oven. :D I will also toss in a dog biscuit.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Perfect timing, my tummy just growled!

seazen's avatar

Yay – the end of the stupid awards?!

ucme's avatar

I agree, end this farcical chase for some tinpot “award.” I mean, some folk are positively orgasmic in their pursuit of these trivial trinkets. RIP & good riddance!

MissAnthrope's avatar

I like the stupid awards, myself.

I hate Christmas, for example, and I am a terrible Grinch, but I don’t try to keep you all from having a Christmas. I just ignore it and wait for it to be over. I don’t pee all over your Christmas trees. Don’t ask me to. I won’t do it.

Dog's avatar

You know… If one wanted to seek awards perhaps they could just wait till after hours or Sunday mornings when traffic is not high… :D

In the meantime I have more cookies!

iamthemob's avatar

No…it’s perfectly reasonable…because I’ve already got them. ;-)

Ladymia69's avatar

I don’t understand the frizzin’ question.

chyna's avatar

I will give my frizzer award to anyone that wants it. I would want something in return… to be named later.

Ladymia69's avatar

is that even allowed?

chyna's avatar

Oh yes. I can ask for anything I want. You just have to be willing to give. :-)

seazen's avatar

I’m willing and able.

cockswain's avatar

I want to know how to get all the secret awards, for real. In fact, I’m going to continue to go to that server-fucking thread unless someone PMs me to tell me how to get the frizzer award. What I’m doing is shady, under-handed, self-serving blackmail, but that’s how I roll. So if any of you ever want to enjoy full-speed Fluther again, tell me how to get that award.

seazen_'s avatar

Now it’s time, the walrus said, to search for many things; like frizzers, babby’s pancakes and dick punching golden rings.

iphigeneia's avatar

I’ve got to say, I have that award, and I have no idea how I got it. All I know is that I did spend ages checking in, on top of, under and behind big frizzers, small frizzers, green frizzers, blue frizzers, smelly frizzers, shiny frizzers, old frizzers and new frizzers.

Ended up with a white thing on my profile and a substandard cake. Who puts cakes in frizzers anyway?

wilma's avatar

@iphigeneia men who stalk you with cake.

Seaofclouds's avatar

I doubt it’s just award chasers that are doing it though. I imagine every time someone mentions it, newer people that haven’t seen it yet go looking for it. So really, just the award thing alone wouldn’t be enough, you’d have to get people to never mention it again…

Ladymia69's avatar

I don’t understand…what are the award chasers doing that is disruptive?

janbb's avatar

I think the frenzy is over. Now should I tell you about the Robot Crush award?

Ladymia69's avatar

What am I, a talking giraffe?

Can someone please explain this to me?

janbb's avatar

@ladymia69 A talking giraffe would be fun to hear! Nonetheless, here’s your answer:

What happened was that some of the awards seem to be tied to some of the older, classic questions. A discussion of one of the awards led folks to go digging up the old threads, some of which are very long and take a long time to load. This slowed down the Fluther server apparently. Hence the issue.

Ladymia69's avatar

That seems kind of dumb…I mean, that to get a groovy, super duper important award, you would have to figure out that it is connected to an old question, yadda yadda yadda…screw the awards. I had a theory initially that they were based on favoritism/nepotism anyhow.

janbb's avatar

Actually, for me the fun thing was that I wasn’t looking for it at all, although I did used to wonder about the Cake in th Frizzer. Then I was just going about my normal Fluthering life and got it. They don’t really matter at all, but for some people they add fun.

I will say there is no favoritism at all; they are awarded automatically for certain reasons.

chyna's avatar

There is absolutely no favoritism in the awards. I know, I begged TimTrueman to tell me how to get one and he wouldn’t. I even offered him cookies and guac. They were just kinda fun to get when they first came out. Now I have forgotten about them.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@janbb Yes, do tell about Robot Crush. :P

janbb's avatar

Haven’t a clue, but I will say that some very odd former Jellies had gotten it.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Interesting… I’m odd, does that count?

janbb's avatar

Dunno :-)

Dog's avatar

It is no longer attainable due to technical issues.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Now I’m really curious!

janbb's avatar

To reach the unreachable star!

JilltheTooth's avatar

@janbb : Thanks for that earworm!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Dog Awwwwww… can’t you just… flip a switch or feed the technicians some dog biscuits or something?

seazen_'s avatar

What’s a frizzer? Why a Cake in it?

MissAnthrope's avatar

Yay, I am totally very odd!
