What is a good source of Domain / Industry overviews?

Asked by albert_e (529points) March 13th, 2011

I would like to understand various businesses / industries and how they work, a brief history, what is the typical value chain in that business, how is the demand and supply distributed across the globe, current trends and challenges, etc.

Typical reference material of this type is sometimes called a “101” or a “201” ... example: “Pharmaceutical Industry 101”, “Travel and Hospitality Industry 201”, etc.

Is there any online source of such concise information about different industries?

Thank you.

If you want to be systematic about it and create a reference base for yourself, you might want to approach it by SIC codes.

OSHA Search Engine

SIC codes are useful; I believe the SEC’s EDGAR system links to SIC codes as well.
