How do I make my ceiling fan stop making weird noises?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) March 18th, 2011

When I turn on my ceiling fan, it makes really weird ticking noises. It gets really hot in my room so I have to keep it on all of the time. It doesn’t make these noises all of the time, but it fades in and out. What can I do?

You may need to balance the blades. Usually if the blades are off balance the fan makes noise.

If that doesn’t stop the noise, I’d replace the ceiling fan.

Good earplugs can work wonders for noisy situiations.

I would inspect the motor brushes. Also clean and lube the motor.

I second @SpatzieLover. You can use pennies taped to the blade(s).

If it isn’t the balance problem, you might try a little WD-40.

try to put a drop of oil on the motor, it will make it easy and silently working..

Take it down and give it a thorough cleaning. It might just be dusty – especially if you have pets in the house. Check to see that the pull handles aren’t knocking against the motor casing, too; it might be something as simple as that.
