Where can I find statistics about marriage?

Asked by uniquenewyork (295points) March 20th, 2011

I’ve heard two statistics tossed around but I can’t verify them with good sources:

1. 50% of US marriages end in divorce.
2. Lack of Communication is cited as a leading reason.

Can anyone direct me to some URLs that will support or refute these? Thanks!

“The divorce rate in America for first marriage, vs second or third marriage
50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second and 74% of third marriages end in divorce, according to Jennifer Baker of the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri. ”

Divorce Rate

Reasons Men Give for Divorce:

” ▪ She was unfaithful 22%
▪ We grew apart 21%
▪ We fell out of love 16%
▪ We argued constantly 13%
▪ No longer sexually attracted 5%

From the CDC
Number of marriages: 2,077,000
Marriage rate: 6.8 per 1,000 total population
Divorce rate: 3.4 per 1,000 population (44 reporting States and D.C.)
This book seems to talk about exactly what you’re asking about.

The thing about communication being the reason that things failed is that it’s normally not cited that way. People will say “irreconcilable differences” or something. Other times it’s that if they had good communication, then one partner wouldn’t have cheated. But it’s rarely just said “my marriage broke up because of bad communication” because it indicates a larger, more systemic problem instead of indicating the thing that made someone so sick they actually filed for divorce.
