What kind of job should I get?

Asked by Trozeii (55points) March 20th, 2011

I’m 14 years old, and I would like to have some extra money sitting around for when I need it. I want to get a job, or do something to earn cash. I’m a very talented artist, and my parents have suggested selling my artwork, though I don’t feel comfortable with that idea. There is a local library, a 10 minute drive from my house, but I don’t think that they pay for their volunteers.

Any ideas?

Thanks :)

www.etsy.com… check it out, check with your parents.
babysit. such good money! off the books! you’re too young to get a legit job… most likely you’ll have to be 16 but that may depend on where you live.

The best way to make some cash is to work for neighbors or the elderly. Mow lawns, clip bushes, weed, fertilize and prune gardens, paint fences or the exterior of houses, run errands, clean out basements, carry groceries, etc.

I have a teen-ager here for two hours each week now that the weather is nice. He does all work in the garden, woods, driveway, clears away brush and fallen branches, etc.

@gailcalled Great answer and the most honest place to start.

@gailcalled nailed it. I put an ad in my old elementary school’s newsletter while in high school and had more calls than I could keep up with, mostly babysitting and housesitting. I have also helped out a local artist, who needed help sanding and priming stuff before she painted it. Try to think of a funny name! My family hired a teenager who called himself “Jolly Jasper.” This was just for fun, but it made it easier to recommend him to other people, so you might find a similar advantage.

As far as babysitting goes (if you’re into it), hopefully your young age will help. At 14 I began babysitting the infant of family friends, and babysat him weekly for the entirety of high school. This was a great experience for me, since I observed the first four years of a child’s life on a weekly basis, and it was nice for him to have that consistency. I bet you could make a similar arrangement.

Good luck!

Keep your prices reasonable. We have small yards in our neighborhood. A neighbor’s son charges $5 for the front, $5 for the back. He has more business than he can keep up with, because a lawn service charges $30, which is ridiculous. For $30, I cut my own grass. For $10, my neighbor’s son does it. He has enough work that his sister cuts grass, too.

You should mow lawns or water flowers or be a nanny for a family friend, i am a housekeeper for some elderly neighbors and i am only fifteen.
