Bike rack recommendations?

Asked by surlygirl (363points) April 18th, 2008

i am looking to purchase one relatively cheaply, mostly for trips to the paved park paths less than two miles away. it needs to be trunk mounted on a honda civic. i have an electra beach cruiser and my fiance has a mountain bike. it’d be fantastic to ride to the park, but there’s a couple of steep hills and some pretty heavy traffic. i know nothing about racks. are they all about the same?

I would reccomend Thule or Yakima to get one of quality.

I carry a $1500 tri-bike on a $29 rack I bought at Wal-Mart. Never had a problem.

i bought a Schwinn bike rack at target. do not get this bike rack. it left a huge dent in my trunk. i would use one that you can mount to a trailer hitch.

@Jamms is, I think, on the right track. Any rack that mounts/rests on/touches in any way the paintjob of your vehicle will scratch it. Doesn’t matter if it’s that $29 rig from Wal-Mart or a $1,000+ custom-config setup from Yakima.

Additionally, roof-mounted racks are easy to forget about… and you’d be surprised how often people drive their bikes into garage doors, drive-thru covers, etc. Then you’ve likely busted your bike and damaged your car.

I purchased my last vehicle with a consideration for easy transport of my bikes inside… which allows me to lock ‘em up and keep ‘em safe from harm.

You get what you pay for…...Don’t go cheap.

Come on, people. The place she wants to ride is less than two miles from her home so she’s probably going to be in the car transporting the bike for what, 60 seconds? I don’t think she’s going to be purchasing a rack that costs more than her bike or trading in her Civic for an SUV or pickup truck to accommodate what sounds like a very small hobby.

I’m anal about scratches and swirls in my paint and I’ve gotten zero damage from that rack. Just be smart about it.

Well what if she gets tired of that spot? Good for you on not getting any scratches. “Don’t be so quick to judge someone, walk a mile in there shoes first, that way if they still get angry they will be a mile away and barefoot!” -Wallmart greater 1996

I don’t even know how to respond to that, as I wasn’t “judging” someone. Let’s forget it and not ruin her thread.

I know it was intended to be off subject and irrelevant. Geez relax.

Oh, OK. That really makes sense. I’m giving you points for that one.

I drive a Toyota Echo and found a Saris Bones bike rack which handles 2 bikes just fine at a yard sale in May 2006 for $ 45. In addition to yard sales you could see if you have a used sports equipment store in your area. A big plus for Saris racks is their durability ~ they will never rust.
