The Shining (though I’m sure you’ve seen it) or Triangle

What kind of horror? Gruesome or not? Spooky? Mind-bending? Classic?

I like spooky-mysterious, without much grue. Hitchcock, not spatter. Give us your taste preferences.

I haven’t seen many of the ones that are available, but I have seen The Exorcism of Emily Rose. It was pretty creepy.

Apocalypse Now freaked me the f*ck out, but it’s not exactly horror…

What’s wrong with cheesy? :(
/cracks knuckles and neck. Let’s do this!!!

The Thing
Audition
Let the Right One In
Santa Sangre
Cannibal Holocaust (or Cannibal Ferox. Basically the same movie, but CH moved me)
Phenomena (well actually, any Early Argento )
Who Can Kill a Child?
Near Dark
Maniac
Eyes Without a Face
The Brood
Black Christmas (Original)
Carnival of Souls
Onibaba

If you haven’t seen it I remember The Ring was pretty good

Silence of the Lambs
Poltergeist
Alien
Aliens
Cloverfield
Blair Witch Project
Audition

Rosemary’s Baby

The Eggs or Cyst.

Not very scary, but I bet even without cheese it would be a horrible breakfast! ;-p

I like supernatural. Some of my favorites: The Shining and The Changeling. I am not of fan of gore nor cheese.

Lady in white
Black Sabbath
An American Werewolf in London
Last Man on Earth (With Vincent effin’ Price!)
Suspiria
Heh, I knew watching horror movies instead of studying or partying/doing drugs would be useful one day. Disregard everything on the previous list except for Carnival and Onibaba.

How about the miniseries of The Stand?

@Jude If you put in movies that you like at jinni it will tell you of similar movies. You can even tune the details to get more appropriate results. You can even link it to Netflix Try it out.

Devils Rejects, truly disturbing

The Orphanage – directed by J.A. Bayona
The Devil’s Backbone – directed by Guillermo del Toro
Haunted ( starring Aidan Quinn, Kate Beckinsale )

These are supernatural movies that would imho satisfy.
Are you sure I can’t recommend a funny, cheesy film from the 60’s with great visuals? The Fearless Vampire Killers ( yes, yes…put that in your Netflix queue…yesss…. now it’s there…leave it, it will arrive in a few days…yessss…. )

Vunessuh's avatar

Martyrs was awfully gory, but damn was it good.

mazingerz88's avatar

Here is another adrenaline pumped supernatural tale, Sam Raimi’s DRAG ME TO HELL.
It’s not gory at all and not so cheesy I think…

I watched a surprisingly good one called the Orphanage. It’s in Spanish but didn’t detract from the movie at all as far as I’m concerned.

Ohh I wish I read this post earlier! A lot of my favorite horror movies already were said. :( I LOVE horror movies, but only old ones. I recommend you don’t see a more modern horror movie (they’re stupid). Some already mentioned that I want to underline are:
The Shining
The Thing
The Exorcist
The Unborn (yes, pretty new but I loved it)
Audition
Silence of the Lambs (I find it more of a mystery/suspense, but whatever)
Halloween (can’t believe it hasn’t been said yet!!—-ONLY ORIGINAL VERISON!!)
Dawn of the Dead (Old version)
Poltergeist
Jaws (more action movie than scary in my opinion)
Psycho (I also liked the new verison, too)
Friday the 13th
The Changeling
[Edit]: and als blair witch project
[Another Edit]: and nightmare on elm street
and texas chainsaw massacre
sorry am I listing too many?

Memento Mori
The Grudge
Devil
The Ring

I’m in agreement with most of the ones listed above. But I’ve seen some twisted stuff lately, not for the squeamish:

Irreversible
Human Centipede
The Saw Movies
Salo
Senseless

also a documentary called “Snuff: A Documentary about Killing on Camera.”
That one is fucked up.

This looks good.

@Jude That looks cool. I think I’ll watch it tonight. I’ll let you know what I think.

Just finished watching that. I liked the original style and lack of dialog, but I felt they could have condensed it to 30–40 min. The last 15 minutes were really great though. Still pondering the significance of the final scene. I won’t say anymore in case you haven’t watched it yet.
