Should I use kars4kids or is there a better option out there?

Asked by tko7800 (586points) March 27th, 2011

I’m about to move and get rid of my car and instead of going through the trouble of selling it for a few bucks I thought I’d just go through kars4kids. I guess those annoying jingles really did the trick. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has had experiences with them or if there’s a similar company they’d like to recommend.

I donated an old car to the American Cancer Society and they made it very convenient for me. I got the tax break on the Blue Book value of the car at the time I donated it and they sent their own people to take it away. I don’t know how Kars4kids handles all this, but I’ll be happy donating cars again to the ACS.

I don’t know anything about Kars4Kids, so I Googled ‘em, and the 5th or 6th match was this article warning that the money goes to another organization.

“Among other things, the group provides scholarships for religious education and hosts a summer camp. [...] Not only do the radio commercials neglect to mention that’s where the money goes, but the charity also dangles a free vacation offer as a sweetener—not divulging, of course, that it’s stocked with its own hidden agenda, including a required upfront payment from the donor and “the opportunity” to go to a timeshare sales presentation.”

I’m not sure whether that has any bearing on your decision, but I thought I’d mention it.

I’ve known a few people who’ve donated their cars to local high schools to be used in auto shop classes. In addition to @JilltheTooth‘s Cancer Society idea, calling up local high schools or community colleges to see if they can make use of it might be an option.

Kars4Kids is a scam and they are under investigation in New York and I also heard that other states are looking into them.
