Looking for a solid web based content management system (WCMS)?

Asked by metadog (378points) March 28th, 2011

Hi! I need to build a site with a content management system that I can easily hand off to my “client.” I am not a developer by profession, so I need something easy to use and integrate with simple HTML pages. I have NO BUDGET (it is a school… surprised?), so I can’t hire someone to do this correctly. I have looked at LightCMS as an option, but I don’t know if this is the best of breed. Can you make a suggestion?

Thanks!

Can you outline exactly what you need it to do?

Hello there. I happen to be a website designer. Me and my partner have developed a web based CMS system, we sell this system for about $70 (keep reading, this wont cost you).

We offer a 25% discount for charity and education purposes as we are in favor of education and charity. We gave away a few copies of our latest version a couple of months ago, and are now looking for customers, however, if you guarantee me that this is for a school I would provide you with a free copy of our latest CMS. I will even throw in a free purpose made template. All you would need to do is install it, log in and add the info. Other than that, all I can really suggest to you is Drupal or Joomla.

Send me a private message if you want a free copy.

This will end up being about 50 pages. Mostly content about what the school does and who is involved. PDF forms to download, a calendar and some light contact forms. Brochureware. The real reason for the CMS is to give the school the ability to update their own content. I can’t be involved in that… they don’t want to pay. The arrangement is… complicated.

Drupal I think is the most popular CMS. So there are lots of books and online help available, and lots of ready-made modules if you want to add features (like picture galleries or forums, for example). It’s free and runs on Windows or Linux.

Ideally, I am looking for something web based with hosting included. Ever heard of an online site that allows you to build a site using Drupal? I’m not looking for a free solution… It is just that guys like Network Solutions and Go Daddy have site builders with hosting, but you are stuck using their templates and they are garbage. Then… at the same time, I have no budget for development… I’m basically screwed.

I don’t think you are stuck with Godaddy templates when using Drupal. I messed around with DotNetNuke on my Godaddy site and it was pretty much just like having it on my own server.
