Why can I only sneeze when standing up?

Asked by Aesthetic_Mess (7894points) March 29th, 2011

I have the flu right now, mixed with spring allergies.
When I’m sitting or lying down, I can feel the irritants enter my nose, and my eyes water up and I feel like sneezing. The only thing is, I can’t sneeze then.
When I get up to go to the bathroom or something, then I sneeze. Why is that?

I don’t know. I can sneeze both sitting and lying down.

On reading your question, I realized that I instinctively sit up when I sneeze. If I’m lying down and feel a sneeze coming on, I always sit up. No idea why.

I think it could be one of nature’s first human social protection drives, I mean, for me at least it’s impossible to NOT fart if I sneeze while sitting. Can’t have people farting all over the place. Think of the social implications if this where allowed to happen. Would we even be here today?
