What is the most effective way to mix water and a powder drink?

Asked by silenceiswar (125points) March 29th, 2011

When combining the two in a plastic bottle, should you shake it side to side or up and down? Does it even matter? Just curious…heh.

This blender bottle is the most efficient thing to use. Otherwise, this frother works well.

Just shaking with nothing to help incorporate the two has never worked for me.

I’m well versed in mixing. My son & husband need protein shakes. My son needs supplements added to every liquid he drinks. We take a blender ball/bottle out with us.

In the house, we have a magic bullet type thing besides a blender and I use the frother for mixing the supplements into juice/milks.

Always up and down, side to side be the work of the devil

Before I pour any flavored powder in my water bottle I take a sip of the water first. Then I pour it in and close the bottle tightly. I like to turn my water bottle upside down and shake it for like 3 minutes…Idk I figured that way the sugar wont have a chance to settle on the bottom.

The warmer the water, the quicker it will dissolve too.

Just performed some experiments. I used a .5 liter disposable drinking water bottle and cool tap water (I didn’t standardize the water temp, but it was all drawn from the cold water tap on the upper floor of a tall building, so it shouldn’t vary much). I dropped one 2.5g sugar cube in the bottle (I used a sugar cube because I could easily see whether it had dissolved or not without disrupting the agitation), and then agitated either side to side (axially to my forearm) or up and down, and timed how long it took for the cube to completely disappear.

If the bottle was completely full of water (no air space), side to side was the clear winner. It took 100 seconds vs. 120 for up and down.

If there was an air space in the bottle (100cc), the mixing was greatly accelerated and the difference between the two methods decreased, but side to side was still slightly faster (70 seconds vs. 80 seconds).

So the most efficient method would appear to be to leave an air space in the bottle and agitate by rotating your forearm on its longitudinal axis.

I would suggest using warm water and then putting the drink into the fridge. And a spoon.
