Email from Craigslist real or not?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) March 29th, 2011

I’m thinking it’s fake because it doesn’t even greet me by my name. It doesn’t even use, “Dear customer.”

My Craigslist account is relativley new, it’s not like I’ve been a long time member and I’m not posting fluff.

I just received an email from Craigslist saying my account is on hold but I’ve been able to log in to my account today. I need to click on a link to remove limitations? If I don’t take action or ignore the email my account will be permanently suspended.

I’ve been posting ads to rent my condo and I have been posting alot. Is there a limit on how many times a day I can post?

YES!

One ad for your item at a time. Period. If you post a new ad, delete the old one. If you overpost, you can be blocked.

I’ve never had so many posts in a short period of time, but I seriously doubt Craigslist sends sketchy emails like that. Don’t click the link!

It could be that they’ve detected your ad has been hijacked by someone. My daughter encountered several ads like this when she tried to rent a house two years ago. There were really nice houses, with ridiculously cheap rental rates. The story went something like the house house was owned by a couple where the husband was a missionary, they were posted somewhere in Africa, and the deal they had to rent their house fell through after they went to africa. They needed to rent the house cheaply, and if interested, she needed to Fedex $1000 in cash to the guy in Africa and he would send her the lease. It was only when someone she knew turned out to know the actual owner, who was not in Africa, but in the midst of trying to sell the house themselves because they were building. Turns out the Craigslist listing was being scammed.
