How would you rank the presidents of the US?

Asked by tedd (14078points) April 1st, 2011

There was a debate on another forum I’m on for the 5 worst and 5 best presidents of the 20th century. So that got me thinking why not on Fluther? I’ve included the top ten and worst ten all time via a wikipedia aggregate ranking ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_rankings_of_Presidents_of_the_United_States ).... Who are your top 5 presidents and worst 5 presidents of the entire history of the US, AND top 5/worst 5 since 1900?

Wikipedia all time says:
1) Abraham Lincoln
2) Franklin Roosevelt
3) George Washington
4) Thomas Jefferson
5) Teddy Roosevelt
6) Woodrow Wilson
7) Harry Truman
8a) Andrew Jackson
8b) Dwight Eisenhower
10) James Polk

35) George W Bush
36) Zachary Taylor
37) John Tyler
38) Ulysses Grant
39a) Millard Fillmore
39b) William Henry Harrison
41) Franklin Pierce
42) Andrew Johnson
43) James Buchanan
44) Warren Harding
(interesting side note, there are four whigs on the worst 10 list).

Since 1900 from wiki:
1) Franklin Roosevelt
2) Teddy Roosevelt
3) Woodrow Wilson
4) Harry Truman
5) Dwight Eisenhower
6) John Kennedy
7) Lyndon Johnson
8) Barrack Obama
9) Ronald Reagan
10a) Bill Clinton
10b) William McKinley
12a) William Howard Taft
12b) George HW Bush
14) Gerald Ford
15) Jimmy Carter
16) Herbert Hoover
17) Calvin Coolidge
18) Richard Nixon
19) George W Bush
20) Warren Harding

George W. Bush is way too high on the “Since 1900” list.

Worst is FDR, Wilson, Pierce, Carter.

Best is Cooidge, Jackson, Cleveland, Polk.

Anyone who served from 1980 or later I didn’t count as history Hastings had time to do its thing.

William Henry Harrison and Garfield are DQd from the rankings.

@12Oaks How shocking, you put Wilson and FDR as two of the worst.

All they did was win two world wars, end the great depression, give us the nuclear bomb, make the US one of the world super-powers, grow the military 10 fold, create the FTC, the Federal Reserve, enact massively important antitrust legislation, saved poor farmers with the federal farm loan act, created the league of nations (that a conservative senate would abandon and doom us to a second world war), started the SEC, FDIC, Social Security, the United Nations…... hmm, this could go on….

But you’re right, they were pretty awful.

And COOLIDGE??????? Are you serious? The man who deregulated us and led us to the Great Depression???????????????????? Also rather curious your list doesn’t include the gimmes, like Washington, Lincoln, or Jefferson.

@tedd You asked I answered. Oh, and FDR could take Social Security and shove it up his ass. I’m retiring at 51 no matter what Social Security says. Still, you got your answer, ain’t shocked you disagree.

And Truman won WWII. Ohio state college should have taught you that.

tedd's avatar

@12Oaks No one said you couldn’t retire at 51, but if you were going to get Social Security at 51 we definitely couldn’t afford the program. Social Security is one of the greatest things about our country, before it the elderly were literally working into their graves and burdening their families if they could no longer work. The program isn’t perfect but it is literally the most popular program in our government at the moment.

And no I’m not shocked you put them either, but I thought I would voice my opinion that your opinion is incredibly twisted.

Okay, here’s my personal faves, based on their unique personalities, charisma & entertainment value.

George. W.
Ronnie “the cowboy” Reagan.
Jimmy “peanuts” Carter.

12Oaks's avatar

Disagree with @tedd and he calls you twisted. No surprise there. Maybe after I retire I’ll go to Ohio state college just for laughs. Why not? May be as much fun as it is pointless.

tedd's avatar

@12Oaks Two of your least favorite presidents are two of the best presidents in our history, and one of your favorites gave us the great depression….. Sorry, I find that twisted. Sounds like the logic of someone who’s been brainwashed by propaganda…..

And its THE Ohio State University.

12Oaks's avatar

@tedd Sorry, Hoover isn’t on my worst list. The man who extended the Depression is, though. You should pay more attention to the teachers at Ohio state college, or transfer to a good college with higher enrollment standards.

tedd's avatar

@12Oaks UNIVERSITY for starters. For seconds, Hoover didn’t give us the Great Depression HE extended it by refusing to give any federal aid to the needy and passing a host of crappy legislative pieces to fight it (it occurred 10 months into his presidency, roughly 7–8 months into his policies, which were no different than his predecessor and former boss, a man named Calvin Coolidge). Coolidge (and Harding immediately before him) deregulated Big Business so badly that it cannibalized itself and threw us into the Great Depression. Other than that, he was just a spot on president.

And this nonsense about FDR “extending the Great Depression” only proves my point that you have been brain washed. What is Glen going to tell you today?? Does he have a book club yet?

And at least at OSU I learned enough to know that in college teachers are called professors, its a university, and I shouldn’t get my “news” from Fox.

@tedd Who is Glen?

tedd's avatar

@12Oaks Oh is it two n’s? My bad.

12Oaks's avatar

@tedd Who is Glen and what about two Ns. Are they ‘professors’ at your school there or something.

I don’t have much to say that is good about any of them.

But I will rank Coolidge pretty high for cutting taxes for just about everybody but about 2% of the population, and simultaneously retiring a big chunk of the debt.

Higher- Clinton for balancing the budget, and making a step to reform at least a part of FDR’s burdensome legacy. In fact I actually kind of liked Bill Clinton as president other than he was obviously a little too immature on the personal level.

Higher for Kennedy for balancing the budget too. Lower for Kennedy for fumbling at the Bay of Pigs and guaranteeing a tense Cold War stalemate until the Berlin Wall fell.

Higher for Reagan for his antipathy to government, and for upping the ante so high that the Soviets had to quit the Cold War. (Thanks also to Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon and Osama Bin Laden for making their lives so expensive and miserable until Reagan could make his move)

I like Truman for having the decisiveness to use the Atomic Bomb. Tough call, and still controversial, but it was that or be Commander in Chief to the slaughter of way too many American soldiers, as well as Japanese soldiers and civilians, in numbers that would have exceeded the nuke casualties.

Lower-FDR, obviously a monumental figure in 20th century history, but his power grab during a crisis should have had an expiration date-like the proverbial “exit strategy”. Unforgiveable damage to the basic fabric of the civilization.

Lower- ANY of the presidents who went into a shooting war with one hand tied behind their back. If you do not have the stomach to kill until they beg you to stop, keep negotiating.

I would rank George W Bush pretty low for the above reason. Plus, his neo con buddies (Progeny of another disappointing president, Woodrow Wilson) are a problem everywhere they go and he drank their kool aid. It is OK to free the enslaved and oppressed, but most of them are brain dead by the time you free them. You have to hang around and teach them what political liberty actually is. The military does not know how to do that. If you want to free the world, you need a post military operations department of government- something in between defense and state. It doesn’t exist, so what are we doing?

Lowest-Jimmy Carter. At least now we know what happens when the world wakes up and realizes that the President of the US is as confused as Hamlet, and a weanie.

@josie I’d give Carter a little more credit. He was just way too nice and/or simple for the job.

12Oaks's avatar

@Lightlyseared I did put Stephen Grover Cleveland on my list as best…. near the very top.

@12Oaks & @tedd get a room. You disagree, live with it.

I agree that Wilson and FDR are too high. It’s getting difficult for me to separate the President Andy Jackson with the Indian butcher Andy Jackson, I don’t care for him at that high of a position either.

As far as favorites: Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and Polk are all good choices.
