How can I clean a certain gross kind of blood off my mattress?

Asked by quarkquarkquark (1695points) April 3rd, 2011

My girlfriend bled on my Ikea memory foam mattress. It soaked through the sheets and is very visible on the mattress itself. I’m not really sure what to do short of cleaning the surface and turning it over. I don’t have a whole lot of time or money to spare. What do I do?

Go at it with whichever cleaning products you deem appropriate, turn the mattress over and grow up.

You can try blotting it with hydrogen peroxide or a solution of oxyclean. Don’t use hot water on blood stains; it will set them. Consider getting a mattress pad to protect your mattress; they are slightly quilted and will minimize stains like this, or if you spill something on the bed, like a glass of wine.

Use cold water repeatedly. Wet the mattress and then soak up the stain again and again. It will gradually get better.

Carbona works wonders!

If you have the bad experience of having a blood stain on your mattress, it is essential that you take action quickly to remove it. Bedding can be washed after a pre treatment and a soak in cold water.
For the mattress itself, spray the area with cold water immediately to help in the release of the stain. Use a terry cloth to blot as much off as possible. Use a terry cloth to dab on hydrogen peroxide to the area. Usually, this is all that is needed to pull the stain off. Make sure to allow the mattress good air ventilation so that it dries completely. Do not over saturate the mattress with liquid as this can cause the wood inside to rot. Source

P.S. Why isn’t the girlfriend cleaning the mattress?

All blood is blood; a nose bleed leaves the same stain as menstrual blood or a paper cut.

Immediate soaking in cold water and blotting. Then I second the use of hydrogen peroxice

Clean what you can and put different sheets on, there cannot possibly be that much blood. Cold water works surprisingly well and easily if you get at it right away.

There is also a cleaner called Resolve. It is for carpets but I use it on everything. It got old red wine stains out of an ex’s shirt that had gone thru the dryer. You just spray it on and it goes to work, blot, spray, etc.

Also, don’t say gross kind of blood to your gf. We have accidents but the blood in blood as @gailcalled said..

@Pied_Pfeffer I don’t think a memory foam mattress has wood inside.

I would take it outside and lay it on a large sheet for protection against the ground, then hose it down repeatedly. Stand it up to dry.

Leave a cold compress on the stain for several hours. Should lift most of it out.

I’m with @faye – Resolve is good stuff. I haven’t used it on blood, but it’s taken most everything else out of fabrics for me.

And really, get over it. If you’re sleeping with her, you should be able to come to terms with the fact that she menstruates. Blood is blood is blood, whether it’s menstrual or whether she had a scrape on her knee.

According to Ikea’s website, you should have protected your mattress with a mattress cover.

According to me: hydrogen peroxide will get out the blood, but it will permanently stain your mattress. You may want to try cold water with laundry detergent first. I can’t imagine there’s enough blood here to cause a real issue

After you spend money on your furnishings, to keep them “like new” you must prevent stains in the first place. A good mattress cover would not have let blood or any other fluids seep through to the mattress.

Jaysus give the guy a break he was just asking for some help! I say dilute with cold hydrogen peroxide dabbed then then dab again a while later with just cold water and leave to dry completely. Hope it works :-)
