Has anyone else's pet eaten poisonous plants before? (see details)

Asked by Ladymia69 (6881points) April 8th, 2011

I broke off a sprig of azaleas yesterday while I was out and stuck it in my handbag. I forgot to throw it out, and today I woke up to a sprig with no azaleas or leaves on it. My heart sunk when I realized that one of the younger cats had eaten the flora off of the sprig. I couldn’t figure out which cat had eaten them. They were all acting perfectly normal. I watched them for hours and googled the subject, getting many different opinions on how toxic azaleas are to cats. I called Vet ERs and talked to the doctors who told me I would have to pay today (I am broke) if I brought the cat in. No payment plan could be arranged. Ooookaaaaay…..

Finally about 5 hours after eating the blooms, my cat Sweetness puked them up. There, I knew who ate them. A few hours later, she had diarrhea, and both times I saw all the roughage of the petals, leaves (which weren’t chewed much), and the stamens. So there, the stuff is out. But what she absorbed into her bloodstream I don’t know. Right now, she is sleeping and I keep giving her droppers of water every 15 minutes to help flush her blood. I wake her up and play string with her every 15 also. From what I have read the major effects should be through by about 8 tomorrow morning, so I will be constantly monitoring her.

Has anyone else’s pet eaten some sort of poisonous flora, and how did they react? How did you handle it?

My cats were always fine. I had an azalea bush and my cats would make the mistake of eating them the entire time! It’s not good for them at all, but it’s usually followed by a lot of puking and diarrhea. As long as they don’t eat too many, it’s not so bad.

Thank you so much!! That is a tremendous help to know someone else’s cats ate them and were fine. I don’t know how this doesn’t happen constantly, seeing as we are in South Carolina, the state of 1,000,000 azalea bushes.

Hahaha, it probably happens more than we think. My kitty ended up dying, but not of hazardous azalea eating! :(

No kitties and Azalea issues here, but, I had a rabbit once as a child that used to hop around the yard and eat the fallen Oleander blooms, never hurt her, think only the leaves are toxic.

Puke and diarreah are good . . . that means her body has smartly identified the bad guy and kicked him the hell out!

It’s ok. Animals started out in the wild, so their bodies know what to do when they encounter a “wild” obstacle :)

Sweetness is a cute name.

Most plants that I know of that are “toxic” usually just make people puke.

The fact that she threw up and is pooping lots is indeed a good sign. Not fun for her, but it means that her body is getting rid of the bad stuff. A lot of plants that aren’t good for animals have to be ingested in some pretty large quantities to do any significant damage.

I’m sure she’ll be fine! But let us know how she’s feeling tomorrow.

Thanks, everybody! I appreciate your info and support tremendously! i was super-worried!

She is doing well, so well in fact, that she woke me up at 5 this morning and batted my head every five minutes for an hour or so. Then she chased her sister back and forth across my bed for awhile. At some point, I actually got up and told her, “Hey Sweetness, why don’t you go eat some azaleas?”
