Any women out there who have been pregnant and fiercely craved sushi?

Asked by erikaziger (345points) April 8th, 2011

I just found out today that I am about 2.5 weeks pregnant. I have been craving sushi like mad for the past 2 weeks. Anyone else experienced this?

No. My craving was cereal. Raisen Bran. I must have eaten 80 boxes of Raisen Bran when I was pregnant with my daughter.

It’s just hormones, no telling what kind of cravings you might have.

Congratulations!

Reminds me of my wife. On one of our anniversaries, she wanted to go eat sushi, then watch the movie “The Fly”. As I recall, she was preggers at the time.

Not sushi, but other things. Careful with the sushi. Generally, doctors recommend that pregnant women not eat any food that carries a risk of certain food poisoning. No unpasteurised food. There was a high profile case of a woman who was eating blue lipped mussels while pregnant with twins and the mussels were contaminated. She lost the babies.

You may be able to quench your craving with other things, to avoid risks. You are probably craving trace minerals and essential fatty acids.

I crave sushi all the time anyway, and I’ve never been pregnant.

Also, please be very very careful about what kind of fish you eat. Avoid seafood that has a high occurrence of mercury and other heavy metals, since that could lead to health and mental health issues for your baby. This is a good resource for that kind of information.

Also, Congrats!!

Good points, I almost made mention of this myself after I thought about it.

Thanks for your concern all. I should have specified that I am veg and have only been eating veggie sushi. No fish. I will prob keep doing this if I have a craving now and then.

@erikaziger from a food poisoning point, whether you’re eating veggie sushi is irrelevant. If you are purchasing the stuff, the veggie stuff could be being prepared on the same surface as the fish and that could be contaminated with the bacteria, and that is enough to make you sick. If you want to be safe… make it yourself.

I’ve studied food handling procedures and microbiology and lab testing procedures. I see how these things happen. It’s always better safe than sorry.

I always crave sushi. During pregnancies, I crave horrid hot dog ‘meat’.
