We have a deal! No Government shutdown! Was $38.5 Billion in budget cuts enough?

Asked by Cruiser (40449points) April 9th, 2011

At the end of the day, all sides claimed victory Republicans for the sheer size of the spending cuts and Obama and Reid for jettisoning Republican policy initiatives that would have blocked certain environmental regulations and made changes in a federal program that provides family planning services.”

Who won here? Who is the hero here at the end of the day? Boehner got the Federal Government to provide Fed paid for school vouchers for his Wash D.C. Students to attend private schools….sweet deal there but what about the rest of us?

Are happy about this turn of event? or are you skeptical that this will continue to be a political football? Did enough get done or was this a hatchet job just to avoid a shutdown.

Enough for what? For the poor and the unhealthy and to get screwed – yes!

How much of these cuts for defence?

From what I understand, the specifics still have to be hammered out over the coming week only key parts (like those you mentioned) were agreed upon to end the deadlock. I think it is a start, but this will play out again as we get closer to September when the new budget is due.

It is funny you mentioned the DC vouchers. I do not like funding like this coming from the federal government. With the exception of certain issues that exist in limited areas i.e. the Hoover Dam, off-shore drilling, funding should apply equally to all citizens in all states. The playing favorites, pet projects, or whatever it is called is one of the ways the budget gets skewed in the first place. I will vote for your money if you vote for mine has to stop.

I think CNN was the only clear winner, but we will have to wait and see if the cuts help the economy.

Ha! I was just going to ask a question about the verdict, etc. but now that I found this I don’t have to for the most part. Thanks!
sorry i really dont understand politics, so I don’t have too many answers for you, I was just concerned about what the US was doing

This was budget butchery. All at the expense of the middle class and the poor and the elderly.

There were no cuts in defense spending, and since we are currently in 3 wars, I guess we can deal with that. I think there are lots of places to cut, but not a lot of agreement on where.
38 billion is a lot, but not enough to impact the growing debt.

It seems like a band-aid solution at best.

The cuts that were made aren’t balanced, they aren’t enough to solve the larger issues or even really affect the deficit… basically it was more about the GOP trying to assert power than about the budget.

I say we send a message and vote out all incumbents in 2012. Keep voting out the incumbents until they figure out that we Americans want a real solution and not just partisan bickering.

That is about 2–3 days worth of the current deficit spending. If we want to make a dent in the National Debt, Congress needs to make much deeper cuts.

jerv's avatar

@WestRiverrat…and not just in programs that help those who cannot help themselves. We need to cut things across the board. The tax cuts for the rich, defense, pork… everything gets cut!

Hooray, our politicians did their job. (said with only slight sarcasm)

$38.5 billion isn’t even a drop in the bucket. Try comparing that amount to over 3 TRILLION dollars! That’s so small by comparison it’s a wonder anyone considerd it more than chump change.

CaptainHarley's avatar

@jerv

Exactly right! Call all the troops home… from EVERYWHERE, eliminate ALL foreign aid, eliminate ALL “corporate welfare” ... and you MIGHT have a start!

@CaptainHarley Certain medical conditions are manageable if caught early and treated properly, but can result in amputations or death otherwise. I mention this as I think it fair to call our budget “cancer ridden”, and now the cancer has spread to where it may be inoperable :(

@jerv

I greatly fear you may be right. Hang on, it’s gonna be a rough ride! : (

I actually heard the number was about 78 or 79 billion. The news station here said they were surprise the real number never came out before Friday night. Originally they were saying it was 39 billion.
Either way I don’t know if its enough but its a start.
