What do I need to do for the Cheerleading try out?

Asked by viscaria1800 (189points) April 10th, 2011

Im going to a pretty big public school next year and I want to try out for jv cheer. My mom doesnt like cheerleading so I have never been in it before. Can I still make the team if I havent been a cheerleader before since its just jv? And what are the tryouts going to be like? I did gymnastics when I was younger but I dont remember much. I could probably do the basics if I practice. I just need to know what I will have to do to expect to make the squad. (I have been practicing my jumps too)

Do you know anyone that is currently on the squad? If so, ask them what the tryouts are like. I tried out for cheerleading for two different places and it was different each time. The first time, it was actually like going to cheerleading practice for a week and then they decided based on how you did during that week. The second time, I had to perform a cheer and certain moves for the tryouts. So, the best thing you can do is ask someone that’s already on the squad or see if you can talk to whoever is running the tryouts to get more information.

You’ll probably be expected to do a few toe touches and handsprings. It’s JV so they won’t really require as much as a varsity squad. Are you able to do back flips and front flips? Are you able to steadily hold another person? These are things you have to consider if you are joining a squad.

I don’t know anyone on the squad since its not my home school, and no I can’t do any flips but I can hold a person. I don’t do that much tumbling, though I can probably ace my handsprings. The only thing is my mom doesnt want me doing it so I don’t know any way to contact the coach unless maybe by email. My dad will let me we just have to convince my mom.

You don’t have a phone number or anything related to the tryouts? What are you going to do if your mom doesn’t agree to let you do the tryouts?

My dad said he is fine with it, I just have to get her to let me talk to her about how its not for dummies. And the schools cheerleading site it down and all I have is the email.

I’d start with an email then and see what you can find out. If your mom doesn’t want you to do this, will you still be able to with just your Dad’s ok?

The different types of things you’ll need to know to do depends on how competitive of a squad the school usually has and what your competition is going to be. If a lot of girls in the area have gone to gymnastics then they may have an edge if they’re still familiar with how to tumble. Work on your jumps, technique, cheering voice and face. Get help from someone who’s been a cheerleader. And let your mom know that cheerleading definitely isn’t just for dummies. Most schools have minimum GPA requirements for all of their athletes including cheerleaders.

I tried emailing the coach but the email is shut down too so now I don’t know what to do…
