Which Republican has the best chance to win against Pres. Obama?

Asked by mazingerz88 (28797points) April 11th, 2011

The mindset of most people I’ve talked to is that there is no Republican president wannabe as of this time credible and charismatic enough to defeat Barack Obama in next years election. What’s your view on this? Is there a chance a darkhorse candidate might make his intentions known?

I can’t tell you who does, but I sure can tell you who doesn’t. Sarah Palin.

If people pay attention to the primary debates, hopefully they will see what Ron Paul has been saying for years is coming true and we can get back to following the Constitution.

From what I’ve seen of the “front-runners” ... honestly none of them stands a chance if the economy is doing remotely good, and Obama doesn’t make a huge blunder.

That’s not to say a candidate no one knows of yet couldn’t make a surge, or one of the “front-runners” could somehow become more popular. But about the only way a Republican wins in my opinion is if the economy takes another crap on us.

I’ve heard some peeps about Indiana governor Mitchell Daniels Jr. But we’ll see.

The only potential candidate I worry about (because he could beat Obama) is New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. He is an every-guy. He is friendly and gregarious. He is common and plain speaking. He has well thought out positions. He is also vowing not to run in 2012.

I hope none of them.

@chris6137

I second that! : ))

@filmfann

Covernor Christie is my second choice. What I don’t understand is why you ( or ANYONE, for that matter ) would choose Obama over Christie! : (

DeanV's avatar

@CaptainHarley Because Christie’s not running.

I also believe that Mitt Romney is going to be a front runner due to his ownership of media giant, Clear Channel Communications. It always helps to have the media on your side to persuade public opinion.

@chris6137, Can you cite a source that says Romney is the owner of Clear Channel Communications? It was originally founded by Lowry Mays and he’s still the chairman of the board.

The wikipedia pages for both Romney and Clear Channel make no association between the two at all..

filmfann's avatar

@robmandu Well, there is this

Or, at the Wiki page you list, check the link to Bain Capitol.

@filmfann, ah… there you go. That clears it up. Thanks!

Ditto, @chris6137.

@chris6137 do you think Romney if he gets the nomination would not have problems later on with him being a Mormon?

SquirrelEStuff's avatar

He may, but one thing I have learned is to never underestimate the power of the media. Their main goal is to make money and Romney is a “good businessman,” which means he fits right into the agenda, keep driving down wages while increasing profits.

“THE conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country.
We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. ” Propaganda by Edward Bernays

Pfffft, down with Mitt Romney. He’d bring in the First, Second and Third ladies.

I’m with @chris6137 and @CaptainHarley. I like Ron Paul.

CaptainHarley's avatar

@mazingerz88

That reminds me of all those idiots who voted against John F. Kennedy because he was Catholic.

CaptainHarley's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate

Yayyy! Ron Paul is one of the last honorable politicians left in America!

mazingerz88's avatar

@CaptainHarley just being curious here but if Ron Paul gets the nomination but loses to Obama, to what would you account that to? Thanks in advance for your answer.

The Republican that beats Obama in ‘12 is the Republican that has the balls to distance his/herself from conservative talk radio, the Christian right, and the Tea Party. This candidate will also re-embrace the original Republican core values of smaller government, fiscal responsibility, and judicial restraint. He/she will be a reminder of Lincoln and Roosevelt and not a clone of Bush and Nixon.

I’ve heard that Santa Claus is considering a run . . .

Too early to tell. I think a lot of it depends on events between now and then, the economy, etc.

Either the corpse of Lincoln or T Roosevelt.

Otherwise, Romney seems like the least wingnutty of those in consideration.

If Ron Paul were to choose Jesse Ventura as his Vice Pres that would certainly spark some interest.

Plus, Ventura would straighten out the (Gestapo-like) TSA. I’m sure that would appeal to many who are sick and tired of being “sexually assaulted” every time they need to fly somewhere.

:)

Ventura recently stated that IF Paul were to ask him, he would give it serious consideration. He also mentioned that he and Paul have discussed this in previous private conversations.

It certainly wouldn’t be a boring race :)

I am an obvious liberal, but I respect Ron Paul. Obviously I don’t agree with many of the things he says, but he has the principles to actually stand by them, unlike most politicians in either major party (I group Paul more into the Libertarian party).

I would vote for him before any of the “front-runners” in the Republican party right now.

@Brian1946

Whether Romney is less wingnutty or not, for me, would be the degree that he follows Mormon belief regarding the magic underwear and whether he actually wears it or not.

They asked Clinton “boxers or briefs?” so I’d regard that as a legitimate question to ask him.

Inquiring minds want to know :)

I want Vunessuh and Neffie to both go Republican, just for the sake of the election, and take over the White House. Cabinet members: Coloma, Adirondackwannabe, CaptainHarley, Blueroses, Nullo, Blondesjon, Jonsblonde, Cruiser, Auggie, Symbeline, Josie, Seelix, KatawaGrey, Jillthetooth, AmWiser, Lucille….. hell, pretty much all the jellies should be there! We could straighten things out between us, I betcha!

dabbler's avatar

Huckaby or Romney. Wouldn’t vote for either but they’re my answer to the question.

mattbrowne's avatar

I would suggest Colin Powell, but I think he doesn’t want to run.

How about Kinky Friedman? :P
