How should I remove a wooden object hot glued to another wooden object?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) April 13th, 2011

I hot glued a small wooden feather to a wood box and well….I don’t like it!
How do I remove this without damaging the feather?The box,I don’t care about. The feather is very thin and carved from tupelo wood.I am afraid to use a heat gun as it will damage the paint finish on the carving.
Can I put this in the oven to melt the glue? What temp? XD

200F will do or take the hinges off and microwave it for 15 seconds at a time until you are able to remove the feather. If all else fails a sledge hammer and chisel will do the job. ;)

@Cruiser Wouldn’t that harm the finish? I think trash the box and work back to get the feather free.

@Adirondackwannabe -Yes.I think it might harm the finish.I wonder if freezing makes hot glue brittle enough to chip away?

@lucillelucillelucille That’s an interesting idea. I was thinking once the glue set the first time it’s going to be as strong or stronger than the wood. I was leaning towards sanding or grinding it away. Do you have a Dremel tool?

@Adirondackwannabe -Yes,I do.I call it “The Havoc-Wreaker”. ;)

OK then….try a hot razor blade that should do.

I would use my flush-cut pull saw. The blade is only .015” thick, 4” long, and very flexible. The teeth of this saw have no “set” to them, meaning that they won’t leave saw marks on the surfaces on either side of the cut. It’s cheap, and I got mine at Home Depot.

I just tried hot gluing a 1/16” thick sliver of wood to a thicker plank, and the saw separated them quickly and cleanly, with only minor scratching to the plank.
