Can I wear white in Beijing China?

I am going to China tomorrow! I will be in Beijing. I heard that it is not a good idea to wear white clothing there because the smog can ruin the color. Is this true? I know the smog is bad in Beijing because the Chinese government digitally removed it for the Olympics on TV. Yet is it really so bad it can ruin my clothes, or are people just pulling my leg?
