Which cartoon do you recall as the first you ever watched?

Asked by ucme (50047points) April 16th, 2011

Doesn’t matter if you can’t remember, just as long as it’s your first memory of watching this paticular toon. Could be a movie or just an animated short from TV.

The Simpsons, fo sho’.
It’s so disappointing and unfunny now. Now I just want to take a pillow and smother it to death while it sleeps. You’ve had a nice long run. Goodnight sweet prince.

I remember my mom taking me to the Flag Theater to see The Rescuers when I was very small. Maybe about 1979 or 1980, I would have been 4 or 5. It was a big deal, it’s the first time I actually recall going to a theater. I remember watching Tom and Jerry and the Flintstones on TV.

How many times I have told you not to play with that dirty money?

Nu, Pogodi! It was one of the dumbest Russian cartoons out there, but it was the only cartoon that I ever got to see when I was a kid.

Gay Purr-ee “Jean-Tom? Jean-Tom, where are u?”

faye's avatar

Probably Mickey Mouse when he was Steamboat Willie! Actually, Bugs Bunny likely. It used to be on before Hocket Night In Canada, Saturdays.

Minnie the Moocher, featuring Betty Boop.

Does The Gumby Show count? (It was claymation). If not, then it was The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show. In the movie genre, it was Bambi.

I’m not sure whether it was actually the first cartoon show that I saw, but I do have early memories of watching The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. It’s still one of my favourites.

We didn’t have television when I was little, so I think the first animated picture I saw was Walt Disney’s Snow White, which I was taken to see in reissue when I was five.

I think I must have seen some sort of animated film before that because I did know enough to understand that those were cartoon characters and not real people, although that seemed like a very fine distinction at the time: different kinds of reality, but real enough all the same.

I’m going to guess that it might have been Sidney the Elephant that they used to show at the drive in theater before the double feature (in the 1960’s).

Me and my brother were allowed to play on the swings that were set up right under the movie screen. We, of course would be dressed in our PJ’s. Right when it started to get dark, they would show a patriotic clip and play the National Anthem on the screen. That was my brother’s and my cue to start running toward the car (a corvair station wagon) so that we wouldn’t miss the cartoon.

Right after the National Anthem and before the cartoon, they would also show a little clip of soda cups and hot dogs marching or dancing across the screen to advertise the goodies at the concession stand. We always went to Thrifties Drug Store before going to the “picture show” so we could get a better deal on our candy, which usually consisted of Dots, Malt Balls and Starbursts. My mom always got a Sugar Mama on a stick and my dad always got a Hershey bar with almonds. Just in case we got thirsty, my mom always carried one of those little folding plastic cups in the glove compartment.

Sidney was so cute and they had this really neat “jungle music” in the background and the background drawings were either minimalist or later they looked a little more like colorful psychedelic designs.

I just barely remember Steamboat Willie, who later morphed into Micky Mouse! : D

Either Popeye ( I had a crush on him), or Mighty Mouse.

@CaptainHarley I think I just know the story

@CaptainHarley I love how Steamboat Willy’s fat little tummy bobs up and down on those skinny little legs. I also love how they drew his lips while he is whistling his tune. So cute.

Mine was Vicky the Little Viking. I don’t remember much, but he was stranded on a haunted ship, with ghosts and animated skeletons. I remember him trying to touch a skull, then it bit his hand and he started freaking out all over the boat. I kept watching the show constantly in the hopes to see that episode again, but I never did, and my childhood was destroyed.

Well it was either that or La Grande Foret Verte where this poor hair got stuck in a hunter’s trap, and night was falling…his friends were wondering where he was. Then it said, to be continued. Never caught the continuation of that, either.

One of those anyway.

I think Gumby was the first.
