What were some of the most dangerous cults in history?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) April 16th, 2011

I’m fascinated with cults lately. Things like the Jonestown Massacre intrigue me. There have been many that have sprung up throughout our lives, but what were some of the most dangerous ones that actually ended up killing a significant number of people?

And if anyone knows of any online documentaries discussing them, can you link me to them or tell me where to go? Thanks!

Christianity? Particularly Catholicism?

Ducking for cover.

How about the Cult of “Progress”?

Some people feel Christianity and Catholicism are cults so you may want to refine the question unless you also want those included.

And as I was typing, incendiary dan’s answer popped up.

Heaven’s Gate‘s_Gate_(religious_group) those dudes that were trying to hitch a ride on the Hale-Bopp comet were pretty out there and took out a bunch of people.

@Kardamom I watched a documentary on that yesterday! So weird!

The Cult of Skaro. They were superior in all ways but one.

Fuck yeah, Dr Who!

On a more serious note: Aum Shinrikyo from Shoko Asahara who attacked with Sarin gas in Tokyo’s subway.

I agree with KKK and it’s still around.

I think the Branch Davidians were branded dangerous because of child molestation but more severely, they dared to defy the BATFE (of Ruby Ridge notoriety) who, with the aid of the media blew this way out of proportion into a full blown firefight with casualties. The so called weapons they were charged with possessing were no more than what you and I can legally own in unlimited numbers now. I would dare say right here on a no doubt monitored site that the bigger cult is the BATFE http://www.menwithfoilhats.com/2011/03/one-indictment-issued-in-atf-project-gunrunners-fast-and-furious-op /http://www.menwithfoilhats.com/2011/03/one-indictment-issued-in-atf-project-gunrunners-fast-and-furious-op/

The Pythagoreans were killed if they spoke, or took credit for their discoveries. One of them was killed for coming up with the idea that there could be numbers that could not be expressed by the ratio of whole numbers – that was blasphemy!

Here is one list of ‘Top 10 Cults’. One of them is The Manson Family. The leader, Charles Manson is one demented dude. Vincent Bugliosi, the prosecutor in the Manson trials, later wrote a book called, Helter Skelter, and would recommend reading it if you have the time. On the Top 10 list link, there is a clip of an interview with Manson years after he was put in jail. Scary.

…All of them?
How many non-dangerous cults can you name? What was the Pythagoreans thing against beans?
@rebbel, you might appreciate this, clip: yakult.

The Cult of Reason. It is still flourishing today.

Scientology.

faye's avatar

@seazen_ I just watched part of a documentary about the sea orgs(?), part of scientology. Totally abusive, kids workingup to 24 hours on boats and have pledged their souls for a billion years of service. And at the end of it is a man laughing all the way to the bank.

Charlie Manson, now there’s one sick cunt…..cult….actually, I was right in the first instance.

chewhorse's avatar

Any cult where so-called normal people relinguish their body and souls to one person.. They have in reality given up their individual responsibilities in hopes that one person will carry their burdens, sins and actions.. These people are dangerous and will do as their leader dictates.. Anything, thus they are dangerous both to themselves and to others associated or detached from them.
