Winter has come. Who watched Game of Thrones on Sunday?

Asked by Seelix (14952points) April 19th, 2011

Okay, so the first episode of Game of Thrones, based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, premiered on HBO on Sunday. Did anyone watch it? What did you think? Have you read the books?

Personally, I was blown away. Of course there were a few little nitpicky details that they didn’t get right, but the casting is amazing and I can’t freakin’ wait to see the rest.

I watched it and was also impressed, especially by how well they followed the plot…of course, Bran was only 7 at the beheading…

I am now rereading the books!

I didn’t, but I read a synopsis yesterday, and the inclusion of an apparently supernatural slasher has definitely peaked my interest.

@yankeetooter – Yeah, it seems they’ve aged just about everyone at least a couple of years. Rickon is most definitely not 3 years old! I think a lot of it had to do with Danaerys having to be at least partially nude – by making her 15 rather than 13, it’s more believable to put an 18-year-old actress in her role (I can’t find out how old Emilia Clarke is, but I’m assuming she can’t be much older than 18).

I did. It was rather good for a costume thing™! Copyright 1968, John Cleese

I’ve never read the books, and they’re all on hold with 50 holds at the library!

CURSES, has that started already?! I’m currently without a TV, so I’ll just have to wait till I get back to the states in a few weeks to catch up.

At least buy the first one @aprilsimnel , it’s worth the $8…

I did not, and, um, I thought it was spring.

I have to wait for the DVDs because I don’t have HBO. You heard, of course, that A Dance With Dragons is finally being published in July?

Winters has come, get it right, sheesh. lol

No, I haven’t, but from the trailers and commercials I’ve seen, I think I wouldn’t mind to dabble a little into it. But first, “I Hope they serve Beer in Hell” the movie

I did and I have the books, still on Chapters list for the last one. I thought they could have made the evil Lannisters better looking! Tyrion and Jon were perfect. But I think I have to say Joffre was not an even pleasant looking boy. Away from casting, I really enjoyed it except it was over too soon!

I watched it. I thought it was pretty good show and I loved how brutal it was at times. I appreciate stories that go to uncomfortable or shocking places. I’m not usually into court intrigue stories and I’m pretty picky about high fantasy so I don’t know if I’ll keep watching. I figure I’ll watch the second episode and see how it develops.

On a side note, the TV won’t let me forget how good Harry Lloyd is at being creepy.

WTF I DIDN’T KNOW THEY WERE MAKING THIS SHOW!!!!!! I love the Starks! Winter is coming!

Ha ha, @Schroedes13! Sorry, your excitement made me giggle :)

Season One is done, which encompassed book one. It did really well, and got 13 Emmy nominations – one of which being Peter Dinklage for his portrayal of Tyrion. Get back to me once you’ve watched it – I’d love to hear what you thought!

P.S.: I’m over halfway through A Dance With Dragons and I’m so sad – I don’t want it to end!

@Seelix Do you recommend rereading the book (or 2) before reading Dances. It’s obviously been years since I’ve picked the series up. Or does he review everything pretty well?

Schroedes13's avatar

@SEELIX!! Sorry for the all caps….....I love these books. Seriously. George R. R. Martin, Robert Jordan, J. R. Tolkien, and R.A. Salvatore are my favourite fantasy writers of all time. Now all we need is a movie series for Salvatore and I’ll be in heaven!

@Rarebear – It’s been a little tough for me to remember what’s going on with certain characters, because we’re meeting up with people we haven’t seen since A Storm of Swords. I found that reading the plot summaries of ASoS and AFfC on Wikipedia to be very helpful. At around page 700 or so, Martin starts to reunite us with people from AFfC as the stories converge, and I really needed a refresher. Because the books are so long, I didn’t have the patience to reread them, but the plot summaries are pretty great – they give you just the most important points, like ”Where was Arya again?” ”Why is Cersei in prison?”

@Seelix thanks. I wasn’t looking forward to rereading 2000 pages.
