Can you make any sense out of this fortune cookie?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) April 20th, 2011

I was eating takeout and this weird fortune was in one of my fortune cookies. Can we try to make some sense out of it? Maybe try to figure out what they were trying to say? Here is is.

If you can’t see the picture, it says “Silence is a virtual, especially dinner time, from telemarketers.”

I think that it is supposed to read: Silence is a virtue. Especially at dinner time from telemarketers.

It apparently means don’t talk during dinner.

I have a buddy (who is on here so I may be stealing his thunder with this)... who once got a fortune from a fortune cookie that read “You are not illiterate.”

The silence at dinnertime is not actual silence; wear ear plugs while dining to create it.

Maybe it’s meaning that telemarketers are really quiet at dinner time? As opposed to any other time, when they would be talking? But, since the telemarketer the fortune is speaking of is in fact a workaholic, this silence is only virtual.

Or it could just be a shit translation into English. I dunno.

Wow. It means telemarketers should be silent at peoples’ dinnertime and leave them alone so they can eat in peace or even n silence.

Maybe it means that telemarketers should shut up, and leave people alone. x)

This sounds like proof that telemarketers do, in fact compose fortune-cookie fortunes (“from telemarketers.”) The preceding ‘fortune’ is most likely a coded message to their kind that the revolution is at hand.
Using my evolved human brain, I have translated the message thusly: “Our silence is virtually at an end. Take arms and we shall feast on the flesh of the oppressors (most likely referring to the fortune cookie manufacturers and/or yum cha establishments)”

This shit just got real, people!

I could attempt a translation, but it wouldn’t be worth the effort.
(You can’t don’t have to make sense out of nonsense)

ROFL! I wouldn’t have considered looking at this, except it was asked by you @KatetheGreat!
It MEANS, obviously, that….when you answer the phone…at dinner…and…it’s a telemarketer, you simply set the open-mic phone on the dinner table and carry on…and…for the Telemarker it’s virtual silence. Sort of. How’s that?

I think it’s assuming you’re a telemarketer, and it’s telling you to stop pissing off people while they’re having dinner. Stupid cookies haha.

I love it! I think you got a fortune cookie written by an Asian whose English isn’t the greatest. Substituting virtual for virtue makes it indecipherable. I think it basically means it would be a virtue if a telemarketer did not disturb you while you’re having dinner. No argument there.

This is definitely in my collection of weird fortunes (I have a box full of them!). Thank you for all of interpretations!

It’s probably nothing more than a spell check glitch, which I see ALL the time. Especially among my more…reading challenged students. I had one who was trying to spell “license.” From the drop-down list she choose “lichen.” Heh! Makes for some interesting reading!
