Why do some people put cosmetic modifications on jalopies?

Asked by Blackberry (33949points) April 25th, 2011

You know…..the people that put those cool, new Audi headlights on a Honda CR-X from the 90s. Or the people that put huge, shiny rims on an old Astrovan. They have to know their car looks ridiculous, right? Your car is old and decrepit, with the paint scratched off and rust everywhere, but you have Audi headlights? It’s so anachronistic.

Because they have a different worldview from yourself. Also they are idiots, fore which I apologise, yet that“s how I think. Discuss.

Maybe its all the can do aside from having that Audi.

I am not crazy about the “newer” cars that they do that too but Rat Rods .htm look great!
I saw them at the Detroit Autorama last year and fell in love.
I will be starting a painting of one pretty soon.:)

I notice, with the couple friends I have that work on cars that usually when they buy a P.O.S. car they are working on getting it completely restored. The car may be rusty and old but a little (or maybe a lot) of TLC and it looks completely new and it’s custom to how they want it. It’s a hobby. Maybe they love the style of a 90’s honda, but finding a perfect condition one is completely impossible and out of their budget. Buy a crap one, build your engine, put all the nice things inside it, make it your dream car. I really highly doubt they’re doing it to just be a nuisance. ;)

I think they do it to entertain everyone else.

Some people look at a car as a way to get from A to B. Others look at them as a reason to go from A to B. For a lot of guys, their car is an extension of thier personality. You may not be able to afford the car you always dreamed of, but you can afford parts of it.

It’s the same reason that someone would knit or crochet a blanket when they could buy one cheaper that will do just as well or better. It’s personal. And it doesn’t matter whether anyone else likes it.
