Is there something fishy about fish if it desn't smell fishy?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) April 28th, 2011

If there is something wrong with anything other than fish when it smells fishy, then shouldn’t the reverse apply? What’s up with fish that doesn’t smell the least bit fishy?

I’d say that’s awfully fishy!

Usually it just means it was handled better when it was freshly caught. The species of fish can also make a big difference in the smell.

In other words, don’t buy fish from Walmart. Or is that smell from their customers?

It’s fresh.

LOL. Not really. Some fish are fishier than others. Arctic char is very good and doesn’t really smell all that fishy. And it’s been so long since I’ve had it but I don’t think swordfish is a really fishy smelling fish.

I’d say this fish lives in the clean part of the ocean. Wherever that might be.

Fresh fish shouldn’t smell fishy.

@erichw1504 & @ucme At least you see what I mean. :-)

@WestRiverrat, @noelleptc, @erichw1504, @marinelife, @lillycoyote &Qingu Of course, as a lover of sushi and sashami, I know that. But you see, there is just something fishy about how my mind works, and I couldn’t resist asking this question when it popped into my head. :-)

@john65pennington GA Award. It’s in the exact spirit of this question. Because here is, of course, something very fishy about thinking that after all the diligent work of human polluters and radiation dumps, there is such a part of the ocean.
