Are there any foods you can eat to make you hair grow longer, faster?

Asked by blueberry_kid (5957points) April 30th, 2011

My hair is very short. Its been the same lenght since the 3rd gade, no lie. Im 13 now and it still hasn’t grown at all. I comb it out everyday, wash it out properly, and take very good care of my hair. I’ve never died it or put anything harmful in it. It hasn’t grown at all! I also asked a previous question if I should shave off all my hair but niether my mom nor my friends would let me. So, I was wondering is there anyting possible that I could eat or do to make my hair grow longer?

Try taking a vitamin specifically for hair. Biotin is good for hair and nails.

Salmon is probably your best bet, since stuff like omega 3 and iron is good for your scalp, and you need a healthy scalp for hair growth. Also try stuff like broccoli, spinach or asparagus. (wtv the plural of that is) Oysters are great too, if you like them. The veggies should be eaten unprepared, if you want the most out of what they can do.
Also if you like eggs, have them regularly, they’re excellent for hair. Now I don’t know if these foods will make your hair grow faster, but it should probably help a lot if you keep it up.
Remember though, growing out healthy hair requires a lot of work that needs to be kept up. For example, when you wash your hair, don’t pile it on your head as you work in the shampoo, start from the scalp and make your way down, and rinse it with cold water, not hot.

Here’s some tips to ’‘grow your hair faster’’. It has good, informative advice, although I would personally skip stuff like pills. (that’s just me)

This is an awesome article about growing out your hair. Mostly for starting out and maintenance after though, it doesn’t deal with growing it out as fast as possible. It’s a long read, but the steps it provides are worth it if you’re up to it.
Hope those help. Food is extremely important with hair growth, but so are a lot of other factors.

Aside from a healthy food intake, no. The good news is hair grows faster in the spring/summer (I can’t recall why) and because of your age then you have a surge of hormones on your side that may change the growth rate.

@astrix24 You never get your hair cut? It literally doesn’t grow at all? I have never heard of such a thing, except for specific disorders, and then it is typically hair falling out, but it still grows. Have you started your period?

I second taking biotin.

^Actually you told me about it last year and I’ve taken it since then. My hair and nails are growing like crazy. It took about three weeks for it to kick in, and I now swear by it.

@JLeslie I did get my haircut in the 4th grade, but that was the only time I got it cut because it hadn’t seemed like it was growing at all. I have no disorders, other than balding in my family. Which I dont have, it skips a generation. But no I have not cut my hair at all. And yes, I have started my period, about a year ago. Why? Could that be an issue?

@astrix24 Hair growth is affected by hormones. Do you cycle regularly?

Have you told a doctor? It is very unusual. Most people grow hair about ¼ to ½ inch a month (around a centimeter more or less).

Does your hair fall out a lot? Do you have a lot of short baby hairs at your hairline on your farhead? Do you have a lot of body hair in atypical places for girls, mustache, chin, tummy, back?

@JLeslie I do cycle regularly, the 16 of every month. I have not told a doctor yet, I told my mom and no help. When ever I brush my hair ALOT usually falls out, and I have a “normal” amount of body hair.

@astrix24 They should check your thyroid (TSH) maybe your testosterone, LH, FSH, prolactin. Getting your period around the 16th of every month means you have a long cycle, maybe 30 or 31 days obviously. Which is not necesarrily abnormal. Women with 28 day cycles get their period on the same day, every 4th Tuesday, not a date, and in six month times, having a period on Jan 16th would mean a period coming on June 5 more or less. But, 30 days is well within normal, my period was 26 days for years. Definitely tell a doctor what is happening and let him run the hormone tests. Do you have any discharge from your nipples?

blueberry_kid's avatar

@JLeslie No mine dont, my periods are pretty regular and you really think I need to visit the doctor about hair growth?

JLeslie's avatar

@astrix24 It could be a symptom of a bigger problem. I don’t think you have to run to the doctor, but yes I think you should go. When are you scheduled for a check up?

blueberry_kid's avatar

@JLeslie Not sure. But I will for surely check! Thanks for your help!
