Do peonies in the Pacific NW have ants on them?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) June 6th, 2007
Here in the east, harmless ants are all over the blossoms but travel into house. I was told that in OR and WA there are antless peonies, the most beautiful and aromatic flowers extant, IMHO, to have on the dining room table. Vaccuuming up ants is tedious.

Good question! I live in Washington state. I just brought some beautiful peonies into the house from my garden and was relieved that unlike my experience as a kid in Michigan...no ants.

I have heard that from other friends in N. CA, etc. I wonder why.

Interestingly, I just received a gorgeous bunch of peonies from a NorthWest garden, and there were, indeed, a few ants on them. We were able to soak the flowers, and that seemed to take care of the few ants that were there.
