Questions about social networking, see details.

Asked by awomanscorned (11261points) May 1st, 2011

I’m doing a research project about social networking in my sociology class. I sent out a survey to a few of my friends and I was wondering how my fellow Jellies would answer. Also, I’d really like some more feedback for my report. I have 7 questions, they’re all simple yes or no, or numbers. If you don’t want to post your answers for everyone to see, feel free to PM me :) Thanks so much!

1. How many Facebook friends do you have?

2. Of those friends, estimate how many you see or speak with on a weekly basis.

3. Are you connected with any other social networking site, ie: Myspace, Linkd in, etc?

4. Do you have strict privacy settings on your profile?

5. Are you friends with people you have never met in “real life”?

6. Are you friends with coworkers and or supervisors/bosses?

7. Have you ever experienced any type of cyber bullying?

@klutzaroo I haven’t experienced cyber bullying and I have a facebook account.

yankeetooter's avatar

I don’t know about @klutzaroo, but the brief cyberbullying I experienced was not on FaceBook…

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

I almost put the same answer as @klutzaroo, I really assumed some type of cyber bullying was the norm.
I’m curious to know if that is an aspect you plan to explore for your project, @noelleptc? If you don’t mind my asking.

1. 242
2. I’d say I speak to about 25 – 30 of them on a weekly basis (either on the phone, in person, or on Facebook) and about another 25 or so of them that I speak to about once a month.
3. I use to have MySpace, but got rid of it years ago. I have a LinkedIn account, but I rarely use it.
4. Yes, everything on my profile is set to friends only and I regularly go back in to check for new things Facebook has implemented and opt out when necessary. I don’t participate in a lot of the sharing it has and I don’t allow other people to do certain things on my page.
5. Yes. I have family members (in-laws) added to my Facebook that I haven’t met in person yet so that they can see what’s going on with our family. I also have a few other military spouses added that I’ve met online through different forums and I have some fellow jellies added as well. All of the people I’ve added to my Facebook I’ve at least interacted with in some way. I don’t add people for games or that I don’t interact with at all.
6. I have been friends with co-workers in the past, but not supervisors. I’m unemployed right now, so it’s not an issue.
7. Nope, no cyber bullying issues for me.

2. Only about 5 right now but I’m in such an oddball situation with all my friends being at college and me at home. While I was in high school it was more like 25 and when I go back to college it’ll be more like 15.
3. Right now the only other social networking sites I use are Fluther (if you consider it such), youtube, and a health forum, but in the past I was an avid Livejournal user, and I have also used deviantART, MySpace, AIM, and I feel like there’s more… I’ll come back if I think of anything else.
4. Yes, people who aren’t my friends can see almost nothing on my profile.
5. Not on Facebook, no.
6. I don’t even have coworkers or a boss, sooo…
7. Not now, but back when I used AIM (and this was circa middle school era when dramaz ran rampant) people used to use it as a medium to say things they wouldn’t say in real life. Had some very mean things said to me over AIM, it was overall a very negative communication tool in my life.

Dunbar’s Number is a theory that there is a finite number of relationships that you can actually sustain in real life in order to have a stable group. The number is between 100 and 300 and averages out to 150. If you look at the number of FB friends that the majority of people have on FB, the average tends to fall into that range. More than that, and people tend to become stressed out trying to maintain their FB relationships.
