Can you defer admission to take a year off and apply to other colleges?

Asked by hsjh (41points) May 2nd, 2011

I got in to a university but the deadline to accept offer was on may 1st. I planned to apply to other universities as well and their deadlines are until july (admission decisions are until september). I had no other choice but to accept the offer just in case I did not get in to the other universities I’m planning to apply. Will I be able to defer admission to take a year off and meanwhile apply to other universities? If other universities I’m planning to apply happens to accept my admission to those universities, will I be able to cancel my admission to the university I decided to take a year off??

I don’t understand. Why do you have to dekay for a year? Aren’t you accepting for this coming fall? If you get back an acceptance froma school you like better, just inform the first school you have decided not to attend there, and that will open a space for someone else.

As far as delaying admissions for a year, you would have to ask the school.

Depends what college, some do, some don’t. And considering the current mess we’re in now, I’d say most likely no.

Seriously, pick up a phone and call the admissions department. It will only take a few minutes and you will actually get a correct answer.

Every university has different policies, so the only people who can answer your question are at the university. Naturally, no one can actually force you to attend their school, but since you’ve already accepted, there will likely be fees involved if you withdraw. Whether you can actually defer your acceptance or will have to withdraw completely and reapply next year depends on the school. I’m with @johnpowell—the only way to get the information you need is to call the university. When you call, the admissions department is certainly where you want to start.

By the way, you don’t need a year off to apply to other colleges. Just do it. If you’re planning on using this as an excuse for taking a year off for your parents or whatever, its not going to fly. Grow up and plan to go to school already or don’t. Its that simple.
