Why does iPhone app store keep saying I have an invalid security code on my payment method?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) May 2nd, 2011 from iPhone

I’m getting very frustrated with the app store. I have tried several credit/debit cards and it says the same thing everytime… “invalid security code”. I have never had an issue with this before. I can’t even download free apps until I put in a credit card. Help!

The AppStore uses the security code from your iTunes credit card to verify your iDevice as yours. Once it gets the correct code it should not ask you to re-enter it again.

I would use your computer and iTunes to re-enter the credit card information and then try the iPhone again.

@Dog I recently changed the card. I re-entered the new card info via the iPhone and that’s when the problems began. I am typing the correct security code but it’s claiming I’m not. If I use a computer to do this, it will help you think? It’s a real pain to get to a computer. My iPhone is my computer!

Have you been able to use the new card to make any purchases? When did you change the card? Was it today?

On a new card sometimes there is a 24 hour delay in verifying the credit card. If this is the case it will resolve itself.

I have used the card several times at stores. It works fine.

I meant on the iTunes account. :)

And I tried several other cards I have just to see if it was the one card having an issue, but all the cards got the same alert about an invalid sec code.

@Dog I tried to purchase a 99 cent app with it in the app store. That’s all I’ve tried as far as purchases. The other free apps won’t download because I technically don’t have a credit card on file.

I am sure the card is fine.

The AppStore sometimes takes 24 hours before letting a new card on file make a purchase. Have you had it on file without changing it for that long yet?

It was in the system for about a week but now when I go in to download an app it says invalid sec code. So I re-typed the card info…same thing happens. So I can’t even “have the card on file” for 24 hrs because it’s not accepting it to begin with.

Try this:
Enter in the card number with spaces in between each 4 digit group. Check all other info. Let me know if it takes the security code.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

@Dog Ok, let me try that. Give me a minute.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

No luck. It doesn’t allow spaces. It automatically puts the spaces in there for me.

I am researching the support threads.

Some are saying the problem resolved by removing all credit card into and setting to none. Then log off and on again and enter in the cc info. But this would need to be done through iTunes and a computer.

(Interested in what @DrBill has to say)

check with your bank, I had an issue with mine and the bank said their computer denied the transaction because it thought it was a fraud because it did not follow my usual buying patterns. They cleared the error on their end and it went right through.

@DrBill The card I’m trying to currently use isn’t really connected to a bank. It’s a payroll card.

Try doing this on the iPhone: (from support forums)

Go to Settings> Store> View Account> Payment Info and on the credit card type, tap on the type entered (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) and then scroll down on the menu and select none. Then click done at the top and now you can make free purchases.

Then enter your cc info again.

@Dog Will try. Thank you.

If that doesn’t work, request that they connect you to a “product specialist” on the iPhone support line.

That’s my go-to solution for most things. The front line phone people are nice but the product specialists are the ones with advanced training and experience. Let them troubleshoot it and find out what’s going on.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

It didn’t work. Is there a number for the support line? Where can I find that?

Dog's avatar

I would like to know that number too @Buttonstc. I called Apple tech support for my iMac and it was always a great experience. I did not know there was a number for iPhone users.

Buttonstc's avatar

1–800-MY IPHONE

There is also one of the number choices on the regular line which specifies iPhone but this is more direct and will usually get you folks who have been iPhone trained in addition to regular Mac trained.

Just be sure to ask for the prod spec. It worth the few extra mins. wait. I have learned so much from those guys really.

I have a similar problem with my iphone I cant creat an Apple ID because they keep denying the code

Call the iPhone number and ask for a product specialist. They’ve been specially trained to resolve problems like this.

Don’t settle for the first person to answer. Insist politely but firmly on speaking with a product specialist.
