If you could learn to speak any other language in the world what would it be?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) May 4th, 2011

I absolutely love speaking many languages. There are still many of them that I wish I could speak?

What would you choose if you had the chance to learn a brand new language? Why?

I really would like to learn Romanian. I love the way it sounds.

yankeetooter's avatar

I would just like to go back and remember all of the Spanish I forgot from 20 years ago when I was in school, and then become more fluent in it.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@MacBean I absolutely LOVE Romanian. It’s a beautiful language.

Porifera's avatar

Japanese because I love their food and their culture in general. I know that a lot is missing in translation from one language to another, so by speaking their language, I would be able to understand their culture better.
I already speak almost 4 languages —Spanish being my native language— and what I love the most about learning other languages is the fact that with each language you develop a different vision of life.

Neurotic_David's avatar

Italian, because it’s such a sexy language and I would love to woo a woman with my Italian!

stardust's avatar

French, which I once again plan on learning during the Summer months. Hopefully, I’ll follow through this time

Porifera's avatar

@Neurotic_David sign me up. Some say French is the sexiest language, but for me Italian it is!

yankeetooter's avatar

And we women would loved to be wooed in Italian…:)

Cruiser's avatar

Sign language…I think that is too cool to talk like that.

I got one symbol down pat

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Cruiser Let me guess, it’s the middle finger? ;)

ragingloli's avatar

well, there is the thumbs up, the thumbs down, the middle finger, the bird-in-head- sign, the the live-long-and-prosper, the hail-satan, the ätschi-bätsch, and many more

everephebe's avatar

That’s a really hard question. I might go with french though.

sugabelly's avatar

Igbo is a gorgeous language.

But maybe I’m biased because it’s my first language. Heh heh! ^_^

Michael_Huntington's avatar

Dutch or French

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I would love to learn French, because no one in my family knows it. I could cuss my brother and his wife out and it would still sound pretty, LMFAO.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Latin. Because then I could understand about half of the world’s languages.

KateTheGreat's avatar

I’m quite surprised nobody has said “Klingon” yet.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

Klingon is not a real language. /thuper serial-ness

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Michael_Huntington State the obvious! I just figured somebody would have said it!

Please tell me you were referring to South Park with your “thuper serial-ness:

everephebe's avatar

@KatetheGreat That’s because Klingon is already my second language.~

tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh’e’?

Dutchess_III's avatar

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!KLINGON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KateTheGreat's avatar

@everephebe Care to say that in your sexy voice? Hahahaha!

Michael_Huntington's avatar

I love south park! Did you see the one where Mr Burns blocks out the sun because he’s a rich asshole?! I wonder who shot him…

everephebe's avatar

Klingon is never sexy.
But… Today is a good day to die!

dabbler's avatar

There are times I wish I knew Arabic so I could understand what’s in their media – just out of curiosity Some days I wish I knew some form of Chinese to see if I could get the pulse(s) of that culture(s). My French is tourist passable but if I could beef it up to serious conversational capacity that could be fun.
My metric for knowing a language is if I get the jokes. So far I can only say that about one.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Michael_Huntington I’ve watched every single episode! Haha. That was wonderful. My favorite episode was definitely the one you quoted. I fucking love the ManBearPig.

@everephebe Even when you speak in an ugly language, you still sound sexy. :)

I just recently bought learn to speak French software that came with a cd and something to load onto my ipod, flash cards and a book. It looks pretty good, I think maybe I will pick the language even at my age.

everephebe's avatar

@KatetheGreat Still sexy… don’t be silly (or in Klingon that’s yIDoghQo’)
:D Ok, seriously the only klingon I actually know is Qapla’. The rest I just googled and learned for this thread.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@everephebe Okay, okay, I have a tiny crush on your sexy voice! Hahaha. Who actually knows Klingon anyway?

everephebe's avatar

Uber-nerds, Elvish and Na’vi are only slightly less nerdy. But hey, nerds are cool.

Oh & I just found this earlier:
Rosario Dawson Speaks Klingon.

Facade's avatar

French for me

Coloma's avatar

I love Asian cultures.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@everephebe I love Rosario Dawson even more now!

Last year I was in Taiwan…so funny, my cab drivers always called the ‘Sherwood” hotel the ‘She-Waa’. ” To the SHE-WAA lolol

I’d like to learn Spanish, so that I could converse with the members of my wife’s family that only speak Spanish.

I’d also like to learn Mandarin, so that I can get the servers at the NYC Seafood restaurant to give me less chicken and more veggies, in their chicken kong pow. ;-p

SavoirFaire's avatar

I already know French and Greek, but I’d love to learn Norse, Sanskrit, or (Mandarin) Chinese.

zenvelo's avatar

I know a smattering of French, Italian, and Spanish. I’d like to be conversant in all three.

Just today I was thinking it would be neat to be fluent in Latin. And I’d like to learn German.

filmfann's avatar

Japanese or French, for the cultures and women.

mattbrowne's avatar

Na’vi.

I’d like to commune with animals plugging my braid into their nerve systems. I’ve always wondered what our cat really thinks about me.

linguaphile's avatar

British Sign Language! (it is not at all like American Sign Language.)

Porifera's avatar

@linguaphile Posh sign language?

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

American Sign Language & Icelandic. ASL, because it is just magical to talk with your hands. Icelandic because it is just so gosh darn beautiful.

linguaphile's avatar

@Porifera No, actually a different language— Song in BSL It’s nothing like ASL even though both countries speak English, their sign languages are completely different. Signs aren’t universal :D
@rpm—I agree. I love sign language and the many things that can be done with signs! Godan Daginn :)

Porifera's avatar

@linguaphile I was joking..seems you didn’t get it or did you?

linguaphile's avatar

@Porifera Sorry- I did, but a tad too late. Am so tired right now and probably shouldn’t be on Fluther! Fluthzzzzzzz…...
And yes, that was a funny! :D
