Did I suddenly develop allergies or is this a common cold?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) May 11th, 2011 from iPhone

About a week ago I started sneezing a lot. It developed into what I thought was a cold. I’m very stuffy. My sinuses are under a ton of pressure. My eyes are watery. I’m still sneezing. I don’t have a sore throat or cough. Could this be an allergy from outdoors? Ever since the weather got nicer and I’ve been spending a lot more time outdoors, my sinuses have been swollen and stuffy. How can you tell the difference between allergies and the common cold?

It could be a sinus infection, too.

I’m the same at the moment. Might be hayfever?

@ANef_is_Enuf That’s possible. I get them often. Just had one in December.

I’m with @ANef_is_Enuf on this. You may want to visit the doctor just to be safe.

I didn’t develop allergies until I was in my mid 20s. It’s very possible you may have them now.

Sounds exactly like what im going through from allergies. I dont know how it is around you, but by me pollen is way worse than its been in a long time. Its possible you’ve had them but just werent very sensitive and with it being much worse this year you’re noticing it more

Do you have a cough, kind of a dry cough? You’re a NYer if i recall and the pollen has kicked in big time around here. My nose would feel like it was closing up when I got allergy attacks. My Dr put me on a corticosteriod and it made an amazing difference. So far no side affects.

Being pregnant will often exacerbate any and all symptoms of anything. At least that’s how it was for me.

I developed allergies in my 30s. If it’s not going away and with the symptoms you’ve described, it is very likely allergies.

@Adirondackwannabe I do live in NY. The only time I’ve noticed a slight dry cough is first thing in the morning. The rest of the day it’s mostly my sinuses that act up. I take Benadryl at night but I’m not sure what else is safe during pregnancy. The doctor said “pretty much anything”. That doesn’t seem right. The Benadryl works ok. Knocks me out though, so I can’t take it during the day.

What I would do is what @janbb said. If it lasts a while, then it is defnitely not a common cold.

@ItalianPrincess1217 I can’t take anything without it knocking out either. My Dr recommended Claritin as well but I haven’t used it. I don’t know what’s safe for the baby but that would be my concern as well.

Check out what your doctor says about trying an over the counter allergy medication like Claritin.

If it lasts more than a week probably allergies, or just being pregnant. Pregnancy usually squashes allergic responses actually, but it is not uncommon for women to feel stuffy from what I understand.

I was extremely stuffed up with my 3rd pregnancy- totally blocked. It made me crazy! The doctor told me to take a decongestant, I don’t remember the name. It was the last couple of months so the baby’s system are mostly settled in. I’d talk to your doctor depending on how pregnant you are. Benadryl is an anti histamine, and you might not need one if you were like me.

I think with a cold you get real tired? You cough at night and feel tired all day, I think. I don’t know anything about sinus infections.

Why not go to an Allergist who specializes in this and would be better able to judge which medications would be most effective for you. Obviously he has patients going through pregnancy and has dealt win this.

But the first thing he will do is test you for allergies and that will also determine the course of treatment.

If you just had a cold it would begin to be easing by now since you’ve been this way for a week.

I’m not a doctor, I just play one on Fluther. :) But it doesn’t sound like a cold. A sore throat is usually one of the first symptoms of a cold. Since you mostly have nasal symptoms and spend lots of time outdoors, you probably have allergies. However, allergies can lead to a sinus infection if untreated. Try taking an OTC anti-histamine, like Benadryl or Chlor-Trimeton, and see if it helps. Also, use a saline nasal spray at least once a day to relieve congestion. I am a long-time allergy sufferer and these remedies offer some relief.
