Stuff I can put in homemade lipgloss?

Asked by tianalovesyou (711points) May 16th, 2011

So I’m making my lip gloss, but I don’t have any essential oils, or essences. Is there anything else I could use, or can I do without?

If you want it to smell, you need to add some kind of fragrance. But it doesn’t have to smell – the moisturizing and shiny components are the meat and potatoes of the lipgloss, the smell is just a nice bonus (for some).

Vaseline. For shimmer, any type of mineral powder brush (can work for a bit of colour as well).

There are a lot of natural oils that would be good. Peppermint was the first to come to mind, but lemon or orange would be nice.

I wouldn’t use a mineral oil base like Vaseline as it’s not moisturising and is a cheap and nasty ingredient that’s tested on animals.

@ninahenry what would you use then?

@tianalovesyou Shea or cocoa butter, possibly mango butter, jojoba oil, safflower oil, olive oil, coconut oil – anything that has smaller molecules that can pass through the skin instead of sitting atop it, like mineral oil and other petroleum products.
