Why am I craving fruit?

Asked by fastfox528 (75points) May 18th, 2011

For the last three weeks or so my desire for fruit has been stronger than ever. I know I’m not pregnant so it can’t be that. The only things that have changed for me are that I’ve been doing a better job of eating well (instead of splurging like once a week on junk I’m not cheating at all), and also my boyfriend broke up with me a little over three weeks ago. I’m not sure that has any connection but I wasn’t craving fruit pre-dumping. I wouldn’t say I’m going too crazy eating it, I’m just curious as to why my appetite for it has heightened so much. It just tastes amazing lately! I take a multivitamin everyday as well as workout for at least an hour. I am 5’1 and weigh 116 pounds in case that matters

Why are you second guessing a fruit craving?
It’s good for you. Run with it.

Fruit is mighty tasty.
It’s a healthy impulse.

It’s probably nothing, but sometimes the body craves things because it needs them. I once heard about a woman who sat around eating heads of iceberg lettuce before discovering she was severely dehydrated. Maybe you’re somehow deficient on vitamin C, although I don’t know how that would happen since you take a multivitamin. So it’s probably nothing, and yeah, run with it! Don’t you be getting scurvy.

Thirsty? It is warming up outside if you live in the northern hemisphere, maybe you need to increase your fluid intake. Also, fruit is sweet, has some vitamins.

Thanks guys. I’m only questioning it cause it’s never been this intense before. I know fruit is healthy but technically it does have a lot of sugar. Sure it’s not as bad as candies and chocolate but it does have sugar. So I guess that’s my only concern about it besides just being curious.

Because it’s delicious.

Fruit sugar =/= candy/chocolate. Enjoy.

Maybe it’s a spring thing. If you’re replacing candy with fruit, you’re better off.

Because you haven’t been getting enough fruit, is my guess. My advice, like the advice of everybody else, is to indulge. Happily, this is the season when fruit is more typically in season.

I might suggest that it’s your way of over-indulging because of the break up.. You say you’ve never craved fruit as much as now, well.. you haven’t experienced being dumped before either have you? (if you had then this dump wouldn’t be as impressive on you).. I would say, had you not given up junk food you would now be pigging out at micky d’s. Thank the stars it’s only fruit, it will soon pass and you will still weigh 116 and remain pretty as a picture..

@JLeslie had a good observation. I always crave fruit when I am thirsty.

@Skaggfacemutt Thanks. Especially watermellon after swimming. Yummy.

Perhaps because your body needs something that it’s not getting. People who are low on iron will occasionally crave dirt. It’s just your body’s way of saying, “Hey! Eat more of what I need!”

Could be.. but since I take a multivitamin I wouldn’t think I’m deficient in anything plus I eat well. Blackberries are in season here so I’ve been eating those everyday. You’re all right I could be drinking more water.
